Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5895

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he took hold of the stirrup of the mount of Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), so Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O cousin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Step aside," to which Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: "This is how we treat (with respect) our elders and our scholars."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. (Imam al-Hakim says:) Regarding the virtues of Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), my intention was to begin with the hadith about the compilation of the Qur'an, since it contains many of his merits; but since the two Shaykhs agreed on recording it, I have left it out.

Grading: The report is sahih, while the narrators of the present chain are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim), but it is "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The author's wording here, "from Ibn Abbas…", gives the false impression that Abu Salamah (Ibn Abd al-Rahman bin Awf) heard the report from Ibn Abbas. The author will repeat this same report with its chain and text at number (8155), where he says: "From Abu Salamah: Ibn Abbas held the stirrup of Zayd bin Thabit…" Likewise al-Bayhaqi (6/211) narrated it from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this chain, and this is what is correct in the report, in agreement with the "mursal" narration of all the others who narrated it. Ibn al-Madini listed Abu Salamah among a group whose meeting with Zayd bin Thabit is not established. However, the report has been narrated through another route from al-Sha'bi with a "sahih chain", as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Isabah" (2/594), and it has been narrated through other routes as well, as will come.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Amr is Ibn Alqamah al-Laythi.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (2/310 and 5/310), and through his route Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam" (5/215); and Ibn Asakir (19/325) through the route of Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli. Both of them (Ibn Sa'd and al-Dhuhli) narrate it from Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin al-Muthanna al-Ansari, with this chain.

All three of them narrate the story.
Note / Clarification: It will also come at number (5899) through the route of Amr bin Dinar.

Important point: The two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) did not agree on recording the hadith of the compilation of the Qur'an. Rather, al-Bukhari alone recorded it: at (2807 and 4049) from the hadith of Kharijah bin Zayd bin Thabit (from Zayd bin Thabit) with part of the story, and at (4679 and 4986) from the hadith of Ubayd bin al-Sabbaq (from Zayd bin Thabit) with the story in full.

Note / Clarification: This appendix (mulhaq) occurred in our manuscripts after the virtues of al-Hubab bin al-Mundhir, ten pages later, while its proper place is here, so we have moved it forward.
