It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "Do you know the Syriac language?" I said: No. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Learn it, for many letters come to us." So I learned it in just seventeen days. Al-A'mash says: Letters used to come to him (peace and blessings be upon him) which he liked to show only to someone in whom he had complete trust.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) provided that Thabit bin Ubayd heard it from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), and the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Jarir is Ibn Abd al-Hamid, and al-A'mash is Sulayman bin Mihran. Reference / Source: Ahmad (35/ 21587) narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (7136) via Yusuf bin Musa. Both of them (Ahmad and Yusuf) narrate it from Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid with this same chain. (254). Note / Clarification: Something similar has already passed from Zayd bin Thabit through another route under number (254).
Important point: Al-Bukhari stated with certainty in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/ 166) that he heard from Zayd bin Thabit, and he was his freed slave (mawla).
