Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5890

It is narrated from Kharijah bin Zayd that my father, Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), died before the sun turned yellow (before sunset). My view was that he should be buried before morning, but the Ansar began saying: He should be buried only in the daytime so that more people can gather. When Marwan bin al-Hakam heard the voices, he came to me and said: It is my firm order that he not be buried until morning. When morning came, we washed him three times: the first time with plain water, the second time with water and lote-tree leaves, and the third time with water and camphor. We shrouded him in three garments, one of which was a cloak that Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) had given him to wear. After sunrise, Marwan bin al-Hakam led his funeral prayer and had a camel slaughtered and fed the people. And the women's emotions overcame us, and they kept weeping for three days.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word has been corrupted into "bin".

Grading: Its chain is da'if. Isma'il bin Mus'ab (Ibn Isma'il bin Zayd bin Thabit) is majhul al-hal (of unknown condition). Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi also narrated part of it, the story of the women weeping for three days over Zayd bin Thabit, through another route (as will come). And Sulayman bin Dawud (al-Shadhakuni) is corroborated.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (5/ 314), and via him Ibn Asakir (19/ 336), from Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi with this chain.
Reference / Source: The story of the women weeping for three days over Zayd bin Thabit was narrated by Ibn Sa'd (5/ 315), and via him Ibn Asakir (19/ 336), from Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi, from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, from his father.
Grading: Abu al-Zinad (Abdullah bin Dhakwan) did not meet Zayd bin Thabit, so his narration from him is "mursal".
