Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5873

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin Salamah bin Waqsh (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We had a Jewish neighbour among Banu Abd al-Ashhal. One day he came out of his house and came and stood by the gathering of Banu Abd al-Ashhal. Salamah says: At that time I was a young man, wearing a cloak and lying in the courtyard of my family's house. That Jew mentioned the Resurrection, being raised again, the reckoning, the Scale, Paradise and Hell. He was saying these things before those people of Yathrib who were idol-worshippers and did not believe in being brought back to life after death. They said to him: "Woe to you, O so-and-so! Do you think that this is really going to happen, that people will be raised after death to Paradise and Hell and will be recompensed there for their deeds?" He replied: "Yes, by the One by whom oaths are sworn!" They asked: "O so-and-so! What is the sign of that?" Pointing with his hand towards Makkah, he said: "A Prophet is going to be sent from the direction of these lands." They asked: "When do you think he will appear?" He looked at me, and I was the youngest of them all in age, and said: "If this boy lives out his life, he will reach him (the time of that Prophet)." Salamah says: By Allah! Not many days and nights had passed before Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while that Jew was still alive among us. We believed in him (peace and blessings be upon him), but he disbelieved out of rebellion and envy. We said to him: "Woe to you, O so-and-so! Are you not the one who told us all this about him (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "Yes, but this is not him (that Prophet)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
