(2). It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out and I was with him, until we entered a synagogue of the Jews, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O assembly of Jews! Show me twelve men who bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and Allah Almighty will remove from every Jew beneath the sky the wrath that has fallen upon him." The narrator says: They all remained silent and none of them answered. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated his words, but no one answered. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have refused?! Then by Allah! I am al-Hashir (the one who gathers people), I am al-Aqib (the one who comes after all), and I am the chosen and selected Prophet of Allah, whether you believe or deny." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back and I was with him, until, when we were about to go out, suddenly a man behind us called out: O Muhammad! Wait a moment. Then that man came forward and (addressing the Jews) said: "O assembly of Jews! What do you know of me among you?" They said: "By Allah! We do not know of anyone among us more learned in the Book of Allah than you, nor anyone with more understanding than you, nor was your father before you, nor your grandfather before your father." At this the man said: "Then I bear witness, taking Allah as witness, that he is indeed that Prophet of Allah whom you find written in the Torah." Hearing this, the Jews said: "You have lied." Then they rejected his words and said offensive things about him. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are the ones who have lied; your word will not be accepted now. Only a little while ago you were praising him with so much good, and now that he has believed, you are calling him a liar and saying whatever you please about him; so your word will never be accepted." The narrator says: Then we went out from there and we were three people: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I, and Abdullah bin Salam. And Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning him: "Say: Tell me, if it (this Qur'an) is from Allah and you have disbelieved in it (then what will be your state)?" [Surah al-Ahqaf: 10]
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but they did not record it. The two Shaykhs agreed only on the narration of Humayd from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), in which the words "What standing does Abdullah bin Salam have among you?" are mentioned in abridged form.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: There is no harm in its men, but in the hadith of Safwan and Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr objectionable (munkar) things sometimes occur. The story of Abdullah bin Salam's acceptance of Islam is narrated in Ahmad (19/ 12057) and al-Bukhari (3329) with another, well-known wording, and its chain is more sahih. Reference / Source: Ahmad (39/ 23984) narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (7162) via Abu Nashit Muhammad bin Harun al-Nakha'i. Both of them (Ahmad and Abu Nashit) narrate it from Abu al-Mughirah Abd al-Quddus bin al-Hajjaj with this same chain.
Important point: Rather, al-Bukhari (3329 and 3938) narrated it at length, and Muslim did not narrate it.
