Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 586

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: In the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we, men and women, used to perform ablution and wash our hands from a single vessel.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with this wording; in this chapter they agreed only on the hadith of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Imam al-Hakim says: I am mentioning this narration in view of the abundance of whisperings (waswasah) I see among people regarding the use of water.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is strong (qawi).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Khalid refers to "Sulayman bin Hayyan al-Ahmar", and 'Ubayd Allah refers to "'Ubayd Allah bin 'Umar al-'Umari".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (10/5799) through Muhammad bin 'Ubayd al-Tanafisi, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (80) and Ibn Hibban (1263) narrated it via two routes from 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Umar.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (8/4481, 10/5928), al-Bukhari (193), Abu Dawud (79), Ibn Majah (381), al-Nasa'i (72) and Ibn Hibban (1265) narrated it similarly via two routes from Nafi'.
Important point: The author's (al-Hakim's) including this hadith as a supplement (istidrak), i.e. treating it as outside the Sahih collections, is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part, because it is in Sahih al-Bukhari.

Details of the narration: This refers to the hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and I used to bathe from one vessel, and our hands would go into it in turn".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it at (261) and Imam Muslim at (321/45).
