Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5843

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came with his sword to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) while she was washing the blood from the blessed face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: "Take it; today I have fought very well with it." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you have fought well today, then indeed Sahl bin Hunayf, Asim bin Thabit, al-Harith bin al-Simmah and Abu Dujanah (may Allah be pleased with them) have also fought excellently."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. And in it there is a lesson for those who boast of or hold favours over those who are superior to them.
