حدثنا أبو زكريا يحيى بن محمد العَنْبري، حدثنا محمد بن إبراهيم العَبْدي، حدثنا يحيى بن عبد الله بن بُكَير، حدثني محمد بن يحيى بن زكريا الحِمْيَري (2)، حدثنا العلاء بن كَثير، حدثني أبو بكر بن عبد الرحمن بن المِسْور بن مَخْرمة، حدثني أبو أُمامة بن سَهْل، قال: قال لي أبي: يا بُنيّ، لقد رأيتُنا يومَ بدر، وإنَّ أحدَنا يُشِيرُ بسيفِه إلى رأسِ المُشرك، فيَقَعُ رأسه عن جَسدِه قبل أن يَصِلَ إليه (1). صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

Abu Umamah bin Sahl narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him)) that he said: O my dear son! I saw us on the day of Badr, when one of us would point his sword towards the head of an idolater, and his head would fall from his body before the sword reached him.
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(2) تحرَّف في نسخنا الخطية إلى الحميدي، بالدال المهملة بدل الراء المهملة، والتصويب من "الجرح والتعديل" لابن أبي حاتم 8/ 123، ومن تاريخ الإسلام للذهبي 1/ 52، و "سير أعلام النبلاء" قسم السيرة 1/ 332 حيث أورد هذا الخبر بعينه، ونسب الرجل حِمْيريًا.
Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "al-Humaydi" (with dal), whereas the correct form is "al-Himyari" (with ra'). The correction was made from Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (8/ 123), al-Dhahabi's "Tarikh al-Islam" (1/ 52) and "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (the Sirah section 1/ 332), where he mentioned this very report and gave the man's attribution as "Himyari".
(1) إسناده ضعيف لجهالة حال أبي بكر بن عبد الرحمن بن المسور بن مخرمة، وقد تفرَّد به، فلا يُحتمل تفرُّده.
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is that the condition of Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Miswar bin Makhramah is majhul (unknown). He is alone in narrating this, and his solitary narration is not acceptable.
وأخرجه البيهقي في "دلائل النبوة" 3/ 56 عن أبي عبد الله الحاكم، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (3/ 56) from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim with this same chain.
وأخرجه الطبراني في "الكبير" (5556) - وعنه أبو نعيم في "معرفة الصحابة" (3284) - والطبري في "تاريخه" 2/ 453 - 454 من طريقين عن يحيى بن عبد الله بن بُكَير، به.
