Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5808

Abd al-Hamid bin Sayfi, who is from the descendants of Suhayb, narrates from his father, he from his grandfather, and he from Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as an emigrant while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was eating dates. I too began eating dates, although one of my eyes was afflicted (with inflammation). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are eating dates while your eye is sore?" I submitted: I am only eating on the side of the eye that is healthy. The narrator says: At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled.
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: On the strength of all its routes this hadith can be regarded as "hasan". The present chain has some softness (lin), as explained in the previous narration. Despite this, al-Busiri declared it "sahih li-dhatihi" (authentic in itself) in "Misbah al-Zujajah" (1201), and al-Zayla'i called its chain "jayyid" (good) in "Takhrij Ahadith al-Kashshaf" (3/ 14)!
Important point: This report is also narrated from Suhayb by other routes, so by their combination the report is strengthened.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (7304), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" (275 and 704), Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (8/ 63 and 64) and al-Mizzi in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" (16/ 443) by way of Amr bin Awn al-Wasiti; Abu al-Qasim al-Saffar in "al-Arba'in fi Shu'ab al-Din" (35) by way of Yahya bin Adam; and Ibn Asakir (24/ 231) via Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Saghani by way of Abu al-Nadr Hashim bin al-Qasim. All three of them (Amr bin Awn, Yahya bin Adam and Abu al-Nadr) narrate from Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: This narration will come with the author at number (8468) by way of Abdan al-Ahwazi, who narrates from Ibn al-Mubarak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some other narrators differed from them in narrating from Ibn al-Mubarak (and gave a different chain):
Reference / Source: Thus Ahmad narrated it in his "Musnad" (27/ 16591 and 38/ 23180) from Abu al-Nadr Hashim bin al-Qasim, from Ibn al-Mubarak, from Abd al-Hamid bin Sayfi, from his father, from his grandfather, that Suhayb arrived, and so he mentioned it in "mursal" form!
Grading: There is no doubt that the narration of Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Saghani from Abu al-Nadr (in which he agrees with Sa'id bin Sulayman, Abdan, Yahya bin Adam and Amr bin Awn) is weightier (more correct) than the narration of Imam Ahmad.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3443) narrated it by way of Musa bin Isma'il, and al-Bayhaqi (9/ 344) by way of Sahl bin Uthman. Both of them narrate from Ibn al-Mubarak, from Abd al-Hamid bin Sayfi, from his father, from his grandfather Suhayb.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Both of them dropped from the chain Abd al-Hamid's nearer grandfather "Sayfi", because his full name is "Abd al-Hamid bin Ziyad bin Sayfi", as Sahl bin Uthman named him in his narration.
Important point: The correct view is that "Sayfi" should be mentioned in the chain, as in the narration of most of Ibn al-Mubarak's students already mentioned. Likewise, Ali bin Abd al-Hamid bin Ziyad bin Sayfi named him when narrating from his father in Abu Nu'aym's "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" (276). So Ibn al-Mubarak (according to the narration of most of his students) and Ali bin Abd al-Hamid agree in mentioning "Abd al-Hamid's nearer grandfather", namely "Sayfi bin Suhayb". And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (2095) narrated it by way of Ya'qub bin Muhammad al-Zuhri, from Asim bin Suwayd, from Dawud bin Isma'il bin Mujammi', from Abd al-Hamid bin Ziyad bin Suhayb, from his father, from Suhayb.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration too the name of Abd al-Hamid's nearer grandfather (Sayfi) has dropped out!
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (3/ 209) narrated it, and by his route Ibn Asakir (24/ 230), from Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi; and Ibn Asakir (24/ 230-231) by way of Ishaq bin Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Ali bin al-Husayn. Both of them narrate from Abd Allah bin Ja'far al-Makhrami, from Abd al-Hakim bin Suhayb, from Umar bin al-Hakam bin Thawban.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Waqidi said: "Suhayb arrived" (mursal), while Ishaq said: "From Suhayb, who said: I arrived" (connected). Ishaq is "la ba'sa bihi" (acceptable) and in a better state than al-Waqidi. So, despite Abd al-Hakim bin Suhayb's condition being unknown, this chain can be regarded as "hasan" in corroborating chains.
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir (24/ 231-232) narrated it by way of Yusuf bin Muhammad al-Suhaybi, from his father, who said: "Suhayb arrived", and so he mentioned it as "mu'dal" (with two or more consecutive narrators missing from the chain). This Yusuf is Ibn Muhammad bin Yazid bin Sayfi bin Suhayb bin Sinan, who was mentioned under the previous report.
