Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5807

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Suhayb bin Sinan (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I never let the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) be between me and the enemy (on the battlefield); I always stayed on his (peace and blessings be upon him) right, his left or in front of him, defending him.
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The text between square brackets had dropped out of the manuscripts, and it must be restored so as to agree with the other sources that record the report. Among these sources is Abu Nu'aym's "Hilyat al-Awliya'" (1/ 151), who narrated it from Muhammad bin Ahmad bin al-Hasan, via Bishr bin Musa, with this same chain.

Grading: Taken together with its two routes (chains), this hadith can, Allah willing, be regarded as "hasan". However, the present chain is weak, because the condition of Ali bin Abd al-Hamid and his father is unknown (majhul). As for Ziyad bin Sayfi and his father, they can be regarded as hasan.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani narrated it in "Hilyat al-Awliya'" (1/ 151), and by his route Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (24/ 232), via Muhammad bin Ahmad bin al-Hasan bin al-Sawwaf, from Bishr bin Musa, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (7309), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 151), via Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Zabalah al-Makhzumi, from Ali bin Abd al-Hamid bin Ziyad bin Sayfi, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Bear in mind that "Ibn Zabalah" is matruk al-hadith (abandoned in hadith).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Khaythamah narrated it in the second volume (al-sifr al-thani) of his "Tarikh" (2907), Ibn Abi Asim in "al-Jihad" (256) and Ibn Asakir (24/ 232) by way of Ibrahim bin al-Mundhir al-Hizami; and al-Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (1663) by way of Sa'id bin Sulayman al-Wasiti. Both of them (Ibrahim and Sa'id) narrate from Yusuf bin Muhammad bin Yazid bin Sayfi, from his father, from his father, from his grandfather, from Suhayb.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A group narrated from Yusuf bin Muhammad; Abu Hatim said of him "la ba'sa bihi" (there is no harm in him) and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", but al-Bukhari said "fihi nazar" (he is open to question). So the hadith of such a narrator may, Allah willing, be accepted, especially in corroborating chains (mutaba'at). No one narrated from his father except his son Yusuf, although Ibn Hibban mentioned him too in "al-Thiqat".
