Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The particle "ma" has dropped out of manuscripts (Z), (M) and (B).
Grading: Its narrators are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim), but there is a disagreement over this narration from Muhammad bin Amr (Ibn Alqamah al-Laythi).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some narrators relate it from him, from Yahya bin Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib, from his father (as in the author's (al-Hakim's) narration), while others relate it from him without mentioning Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib, and Yahya did not live in the time of Umar bin al-Khattab (so it is munqati'). However, a report similar to this one is narrated by several other routes.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Asim narrated it in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (285), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1284), and by his route Ibn Asakir (24/ 240), from Sa'id bin Yahya al-Umawi, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abd al-Barr narrated it in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 340) via al-Fadl bin Musa, from Muhammad bin Amr.
Reference / Source: It was narrated at length and in abridged form by al-Baghawi (1284), and by his route Ibn Asakir (24/ 240), by way of Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah; by Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 153) and in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3804) by way of Muhammad bin Bishr; and by Ibn Asakir (24/ 240) by way of Abd al-Wahhab bin Abd al-Majid al-Thaqafi. All three of them narrate from Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqamah, from Yahya bin Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib, as "mursal".
Reference / Source: Similarly, al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (7297), Ibn al-Sunni in "Amal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah" (408), Ibn Hazm in "al-Muhalla" (8/ 297), Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 340), Ibn Asakir (24/ 241-242) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah" (8/ 77 and 78) narrated it by way of Abd Allah bin Mus'ab bin Thabit al-Zubayri, from Rabi'ah bin Uthman bin Rabi'ah al-Madani, from Zayd bin Aslam, from his father, who said: I went out with Umar bin al-Khattab until he entered Suhayb's orchard at al-Aliyah, and he mentioned something similar, except that concerning spending he said: "There is no extravagance with my wealth; rather, I spend it only where it is due." And concerning captivity he said: "The Romans took me captive when I was young", mentioning the Romans here instead of the Arabs.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (2086) and al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (5347) narrated it via Amr bin Asim al-Kilabi, from Hammad bin Salamah, from Zayd bin Aslam, from his father, that Umar bin al-Khattab said to Suhayb, and he mentioned it, but without mentioning extravagance in spending. And concerning his claim of descent from al-Namir bin Qasit he said: "I was nursed at al-Ubullah", that is, he mentioned nursing instead of captivity. Al-Tabarani's narration is abridged, mentioning only his taking the kunyah Abu Yahya.
Note / Clarification: It will come with the author at number (7932) by way of Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Aqil, from Hamzah bin Suhayb, from his father, that Umar bin al-Khattab said to him, and he mentioned the captivity as in the narration of Rabi'ah bin Uthman, that those who captured him were the Romans. Concerning extravagance in spending: Umar said to him, "You are extravagant with food", and Suhayb replied: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The best of you is the one who feeds others." Some of those who recorded the hadith added the words "and returns the greeting".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Aqil is alone in narrating this wording, and he is "layyin al-hadith" (soft, i.e. weak).
