Muhammad bin Umarah bin Khuzaymah bin Thabit narrates from his grandfather that my grandfather held back his weapons on the day of the Battle of the Camel and the day of the Battle of Siffin until Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred. So when Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Ammar will be killed by a rebellious group." The narrator says: Then he drew his sword and fought until he was martyred.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this name is corrupted into "al-Muzani".

Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have the word "bi-silahihi" (with an added "b" at the start), while the text adopted is taken from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak".

Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting evidence), while the present chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the weakness of Abu Ma'shar al-Madani (whose name is Najih) and also its being "mursal", since Muhammad bin Umarah bin Khuzaymah did not meet his grandfather nor the days of Siffin.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (36/ 21873) narrated it from Yunus bin Muhammad and Khalaf bin al-Walid, from Abu Ma'shar, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For Khuzaymah bin Thabit's (may Allah be pleased with him) presence at Siffin with Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) there is a "shahid" (supporting report) from the narration of Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, found in al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" (1/ 277) with a "hasan chain".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Another supporting report is from a "mursal" narration of al-Hakam bin Utaybah, found in Ahmad's "al-Ilal" in the narration of his son Abd Allah (462 and 958).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A third supporting report is from a "mursal" narration of al-Zuhri, found in Abd al-Razzaq (15568) and al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" (1/ 546).
Important point: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi said in "Mudih al-Awham" (1/ 276): The scholars of the sirah are unanimous (agreed) that Khuzaymah bin Thabit, Dhu al-Shahadatayn (may Allah be pleased with him), was present with Ali at Siffin.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The marfu' part of this hadith also has several supporting reports; see the previous number (2684).
