أخبرنا أبو زكريا العَنْبري، حدثنا محمد بن عمرو الحَرَشي، حدثنا يحيى بن يحيى، أخبرنا وكيع، عن إسماعيل بن أبي خالد، عن قيس بن أبي حازم، قال: قال عبدُ الله: ما أعلمُ أحدًا خرجَ في الفتنةِ يريدُ به وجهَ الله تعالى والدارَ الآخرةَ إلَّا عمارَ بنَ ياسر (1). صحيح الإسناد.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I do not know of anyone who went out (to the field) during the trial (fitnah, the fighting) seeking by it only the pleasure of Allah Almighty and the Abode of the Hereafter, except Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him)."

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator "Abd Allah" refers to Ibn Mas'ud.
وروى مثلَه ابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 43/ 454 عن ابن عُمر، بإسناد حسن.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar report was related by Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (43/ 454) from Abd Allah bin Umar with a "hasan" chain.
وقال الذهبي في "تلخيصه": مرادُه بالفتنة هنا نَيلُهم من عثمان، لأنَّ عبد الله مات قبل مقتل عثمان.
Important point: Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": What he means by fitnah here is people attacking Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), because Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) died before the killing of Uthman.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
