Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5781

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I hope that on the day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he did not love a man who would (ever) enter the Fire." People said: We used to see that he (peace and blessings be upon him) loved you, sought your help and appointed you as an official. He said: "Allah knows best about his love for me, but that is sufficient. And we used to see that he (peace and blessings be upon him) loved a (particular) man." They asked: Who is he? He said: "Ammar bin Yasir." The people said: Then he is the very one whom you people killed at the Battle of Siffin.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), if al-Hasan al-Basri's hearing from Amr bin al-As is established, for without doubt he lived in his time at Basrah.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are trustworthy (thiqat), but it is "mursal", as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mu'adh al-Anbari is Ibn Mu'adh, Ibn Awn is Abd Allah bin Awn bin Artaban, and al-Hasan is al-Hasan al-Basri, who did not hear from Amr bin al-As (i.e. no meeting between them is established).
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8216) recorded it via Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman from Mu'adh bin Mu'adh al-Anbari, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (29/ 17807) recorded a similar narration through the route of Jarir bin Hazim from al-Hasan al-Basri.
Details of the narration: But he mentioned in his narration that Amr bin al-As mentioned both Ammar bin Yasir and Ibn Mas'ud.
Reference / Source: Likewise Ahmad (7781) narrated through the route of Abu Nawfal bin Abi Aqrab that: Amr bin al-As was gripped by severe anxiety at the time of death. When his son Abd Allah bin Amr saw this, he said: O Abu Abd Allah! What is this anxiety, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to keep you close to him and entrust you with responsibilities … then he mentioned something similar, and it also mentions Ammar and Ibn Mas'ud.
