Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5742

Muhammad bin Umar (al-Waqidi) states that the lineage of Sayyiduna Khabbab bin al-Aratt goes through Jandalah bin Sa'd bin Khuzaymah and reaches Banu Sa'd bin Zayd Manat. It is mentioned about him that he was brought to Makkah as a captive, where Umm Anmar bint Siba' al-Khuza'iyyah bought him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood between Sayyiduna Khabbab and Sayyiduna Jubayr bin Atik (may Allah be pleased with them both). Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) took part in the Battles of Badr, Uhud, al-Khandaq and all the battles alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He died in the year 37 AH, and at that time he was seventy-three years old.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Umar is "al-Waqidi".
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 151) quoted al-Waqidi's statement about the lineage of Khabbab: "Khabbab's descendants also state it (the lineage) this way."
Details of the narration: Then Ibn Sa'd said: The historians say that Khabbab had been taken captive (in childhood), and Umm Anmar bought him; she was Umm Siba' al-Khuza'iyyah.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd further said (8/ 136): I heard someone mention that Khabbab was an Arab man of the tribe of Banu Sa'd bin Zayd Manat bin Tamim; he was taken captive, then Umm Anmar bought him and set him free.
Details of the narration: After that Ibn Sa'd (3/ 152) mentioned the brotherhood (mu'akhah) and the battles in which Khabbab took part, beginning it with the word "qalu" (the historians say). However, he named the Companion with whom Khabbab was made a brother as "Jabr", and there are two views about his name.
Important point: Then he mentioned Khabbab's death and his age at the time of his death on the authority of Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi, but al-Waqidi traced the chain of this to Abd Allah bin Khabbab, stating that it was he who reported it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Regarding the brotherhood (mu'akhah), reports have also come that contradict the one here. Thus Muhammad bin Habib stated with certainty in "al-Muhabbar" p. 73 that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood between Khabbab and Jabbar bin Sakhr.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abd al-Barr mentioned in "al-Isti'ab" p. 206 that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood between Khabbab and Tamim, the freed client of Khirash bin al-Simmah. Then he said: It is also said that he was made a brother of "Jabr bin Atik"; then he himself concluded: "The first view is more correct."
