Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Important point: The mention of Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) taking part in the Battle of Badr is a statement of al-Zuhri (which has become included in the hadith), as will be detailed below. Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it in the Musnad (34/ 21053) via Ali bin Ayyash, with this same chain. Details of the narration: It contains the mention that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his Lord for three things. Reference / Source: Ahmad also recorded this hadith (21053) from Abu al-Yaman, and al-Nasa'i (1334) through the route of Uthman bin Sa'id bin Kathir al-Himsi and Baqiyyah bin al-Walid. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: All three of these narrators narrate it from Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah, with this same chain. Reference / Source: In al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (3/ 215) these words appear: Ali bin Ayyash said: Shu'ayb narrated to us from al-Zuhri that: "Khabbab took part in Badr, and he was an ally of Banu Zuhrah." Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here al-Bukhari made clear that this phrase (about taking part in Badr) is a statement of al-Zuhri, so it is "mudraj" (interpolated) in the report. It is in fact a parenthetical sentence that al-Zuhri said on his own account while narrating this hadith of Khabbab.
