Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5732

It is narrated from Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Khabbab bin al-Aratt bin Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with him) was an ally of Banu Zuhrah, and it is also said that he was a freed slave (mawla) of Banu Zuhrah.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this has been corrupted into "al-Hizami".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) This is how the narration from 'Urwah gives the name of Khabbab's grandfather, and it goes against the view of the body of genealogists, who named his grandfather "Jandalah".

Reference / Source: (3) Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" (3611), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2339), from Muhammad bin 'Amr bin Khalid al-Harrani, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" 3/ 151 from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, he from Musa bin Ya'qub al-Zam'i, he from Abu al-Aswad (the orphan in 'Urwah's care), who mentioned Khabbab's lineage and said: "Khabbab bin al-Aratt bin Jandalah bin Sa'd bin Khuzaymah bin Ka'b, of Banu Sa'd bin Zayd Manat bin Tamim."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thus he named Khabbab's grandfather "Jandalah", but he made it the saying of Abu al-Aswad, the orphan in 'Urwah's care, and did not carry it beyond him.
