Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is weak because of the weakness of 'Ali bin 'Abis (al-Asadi al-Kufi).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ali bin 'Abis is alone in narrating this report via the route of Isma'il (Ibn Abi Khalid) from Qays (Ibn Abi Hazim). As for the first route, he has been corroborated (mutaba'ah) on it, but with "Abu al-Bakhtari" mentioned in its chain between 'Amr bin Murrah and 'Ali bin Abi Talib, and Abu al-Bakhtari did not meet 'Ali.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it at full length in "al-Kabir" (6041) from Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah al-Hadrami, he from Ibrahim bin Yusuf al-Sayrafi, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir narrated it in "Tarikh Dimashq" 12/ 275 via the route of Muhammad bin Muhammad bin Sulayman al-Baghandi, he from Ibrahim bin Yusuf, he from 'Ali bin 'Abis, he from al-A'mash and Abu Maryam, they from 'Amr bin Murrah, he from Abu al-Bakhtari; and (in the other line) from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, he from Qays bin Abi Hazim; both said: 'Ali was asked ...
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Baghandi added "Abu al-Bakhtari" to his chain, and this is correct, agreeing with the narration of al-Bazzar (575), where he narrated a portion of this long report which the author did not quote in full. Likewise the group of trustworthy companions of al-A'mash narrated it from him, from 'Amr bin Murrah, as has passed at number (5478), where the author narrated a portion of it.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah 12/ 119 narrated it in brief, with the mention of 'Ammar bin Yasir, from Abu Mu'awiyah, he from al-A'mash, he from 'Amr bin Murrah, and he from Abu al-Bakhtari, who said: 'Ali was asked about 'Ammar.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah 12/ 119 and Ibn 'Asakir 43/ 394 also narrated it in brief, with the mention of 'Ammar, via the route of Mis'ar bin Kidam, he from 'Amr bin Murrah, and he from Abu al-Bakhtari, who said: 'Ali was asked about 'Ammar ... and he added: "Faith has entered his hearing and his sight", and he mentioned whatever parts of his body Allah willed.
Details of the narration: As for Hudhayfah's knowledge of the hypocrites, it was a well-known matter that Hudhayfah knew the names of the hypocrites, which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had told him. 'Umar bin al-Khattab asked him, adjuring him by Allah: "By Allah, am I one of them?" Hudhayfah said: "No", and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wept.
Reference / Source: Musaddad narrated it (as in "al-Matalib" (3623)), as did Ibn Abi Shaybah 15/ 107, Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" 2/ 769, Abu Bakr al-Khallal in "al-Sunnah" (1288), and others.
Grading: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Matalib": Its chain is sahih.
