Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5728

It is narrated from Qays that when his shroud was brought to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was at that time leaning for support on Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) - the narrator said: a new shroud was brought to him - he said: "What will you do with this? If your companion (that is, I) is righteous, Allah Almighty will exchange it for him with something better, and if the matter is otherwise, Allah Almighty will strike his face with this very shroud on the Day of Resurrection."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (3) In manuscript (S) it is "mustanidan", and both are correct.

Note / Clarification: (4) In our manuscripts this has been corrupted into "Ibn Mas'ud". This is certainly a mistake, since 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud died before Hudhayfah. The correct text is established from Abu Nu'aym's "Hilyat al-Awliya'" 1/ 282 and from the author's next narration.
Note / Clarification: This "Abu Mas'ud" is "'Uqbah bin 'Amr al-Ansari al-Badri".

Note / Clarification: (5) It has come thus in our manuscripts, with the plural nun dropped without any particle requiring the subjunctive or jussive; this is permissible and in use in the Arabic language merely for lightening, as Ibn Malik explained at length in "Shawahid al-Tawdih wa al-Tashih" p. 170 onwards.

Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih.
Note / Clarification: Muhammad bin Ishaq refers to "Abu al-'Abbas al-Thaqafi al-Sarraj", Jarir refers to "Ibn 'Abd al-Hamid", Isma'il refers to "Ibn Abi Khalid", and Qays refers to "Ibn Abi Hazim".
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "Hilyat al-Awliya'" 1/ 282 from Abu Hamid bin Jabalah, he from Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Thaqafi al-Sarraj, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Except that he said: "from Qays, from Abu Mas'ud, who said: When Hudhayfah was brought his shroud ..." (and he mentioned it). Thus he made it a narration of Qays bin Abi Hazim from Abu Mas'ud! Yet Qays is a senior Successor who lived in both eras (tabi'i kabir mukhadram).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah 13/ 380, and via his route al-Khattabi in "Gharib al-Hadith" 2/ 332, narrated something similar from Waki' bin al-Jarrah, he from Isma'il, and he from Qays, who said: When Hudhayfah was brought his shroud ...
Technical note / Defect ('illah): So he agreed with the author's narration in not mentioning "Abu Mas'ud" in the chain.
Reference / Source: Likewise Ibn Sa'd 4/ 256, Ibn Abi Shaybah 13/ 380, al-Bukhari in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (496), Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (2959), and al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" 1/ 500 narrated something similar via the route of Khalid bin al-Rabi' al-'Absi, who said: When news reached us of the severity of Hudhayfah's illness, a group from Banu 'Abs and a group from the Ansar went out to him ...
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Except that in this narration Hudhayfah said: "Do not be extravagant with my shroud, for if your companion has good with Allah, he will be given something better in exchange for it; otherwise it will be stripped from him swiftly."
Reference / Source: Likewise 'Abd al-Razzaq (6210), Ibn Sa'd 4/ 257 and 258, al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (3006) and (3007), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" 1/ 282, and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Kubra" 3/ 403 narrated something similar via the route of Silah bin Zufar, who said: Hudhayfah sent me and Abu Mas'ud to buy a shroud for him ... Hudhayfah said: "These two will remain on me only a short while until I am given in exchange something better or worse than them."
