Sulayman bin Ayyub narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather, that Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was a brother-in-law of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through four connections (being married to sisters of his wives): In the marriage of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), while her sister Umm Kulthum bint Abi Bakr was in the marriage of Sayyiduna Talhah, and from her were born to him Zakariyya, Yusuf and Aishah. Likewise, in the marriage of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), while her sister Hamnah bint Jahsh was in the marriage of Sayyiduna Talhah, and from her was born to him Muhammad, who was martyred with his father in the Battle of the Camel. Also, in the marriage of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was Sayyidah Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with her), while her sister al-Rifa'ah bint Abi Sufyan was in the marriage of Sayyiduna Talhah. And in the marriage of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was Sayyidah Umm Salamah bint Abi Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), while her sister Qaribah bint Abi Umayyah was in the marriage of Sayyiduna Talhah, and from her was born to him Maryam bint Talhah.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts this has been corrupted here into "Muhammad". The correction is from the author's earlier chain at number (4357) and from his two coming chains at numbers (5704) and (5714), where he narrated three reports through this "Talhi chain" whose lineage goes back to "Musa bin Talhah bin 'Ubayd Allah", not to his brother "Muhammad bin Talhah al-Sajjad".

Grading: (3) It is da'if munkar; see the discussion of this Talhi chain under hadith number (5691).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): One of the signs of nakarah (unacceptability) in this report is that "al-Rifa'ah bint Abi Sufyan" (the correct form of her name is "al-Fari'ah") is mentioned among the wives of Talhah bin 'Ubayd Allah. Yet Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" 3/ 196, Muhammad bin Habib al-Baghdadi in "al-Muhabbar" p. 100, and Ibn Hazm in "Jamharat Ansab al-'Arab" p. 138 (despite the breadth of their knowledge) did not mention her among Talhah's wives. Ibn Sa'd did, however, mention "al-Far'ah bint 'Ali", and said that she was a captive (sabiyyah) from Banu Taghlib.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The mention of "Quraybah bint Abi Sufyan" as a wife of Talhah is likewise questionable, even though Ibn Habib mentioned her among the women Talhah married. That is because Ibn Habib mentioned in "al-Muhabbar" p. 449 that Quraybah was married by 'Umar bin al-Khattab, then Islam separated them; then she accepted Islam and Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan married her; then he divorced her and 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr al-Siddiq married her, and she remained with him. We say: it is not known that 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr al-Siddiq parted from her until he died, and 'Abd al-Rahman died a considerable time after Talhah bin 'Ubayd Allah.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi 'Asim narrated in "al-Sunnah" (1403), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (216), Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" 3/ 284, Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 25/ 92, and al-Diya' in "al-Mukhtarah" 3/ (832) and (849), through various routes from Sulayman bin Ayyub, he from his father, he from his grandfather, he from Musa bin Talhah, and he from Talhah, who said: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me he would say: "You are my brother-in-law (silf) in this world and my brother-in-law in the Hereafter."
Grading: This chain is weak, and the discussion of this chain has passed under hadith (5691).
