أخبرني محمد بن يعقوب الحافظ، أخبرنا محمد بن إسحاق الثَّقَفي، حدثنا عباد بن الوليد الغُبَري (2)، حدثنا حَبّان، حدثنا شريك بن الخَطّاب (3)، حدثني عُتْبة بن صَعْصَعةَ بن الأحْنَف، عن عِكْراشٍ، قال: كنا نُقاتل عليًّا مع طلحةَ ومعنا مَروانُ، قال: فانهزَمْنا، قال: فقال مَروانُ: لا أُدرِكُ بثَأْري بعد هذا اليوم من طلحةَ، قال: فرَمَاهُ بسهمٍ فقَتَله (4).

It is narrated from Ikrash that we were fighting against Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) alongside Sayyiduna Talhah, and Marwan was with us. When we were defeated, Marwan said: "After this day I will not get another chance to take my revenge on Talhah." So he shot an arrow at him, from which he was martyred.

(2) تصحف في (ز) و (ب) إلى: العنزي، وأهملت في (ص) و (م)، والتصويب من "المؤتلف والمختلف" للدارقطني 3/ 1729، ومن "الأنساب" للسمعاني نسبة (الغبري).
Note / Clarification: (2) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this has been misread (tashif) as "al-'Anazi", and in (S) and (M) it was left undotted. The correct name, "al-Ghubari" (as a nisbah), has been established from al-Daraqutni's "al-Mu'talif wa al-Mukhtalif" 3/ 1729 and al-Sam'ani's "al-Ansab".
(3) تحرَّف في نسخنا الخطية إلى: الحباب، والتصويب من "تاريخ البخاري الكبير" 7/ 89 - 90 حيث ذكر هذا الخبر من طريقين عن شريك بن الخطاب، وكذلك سُمي في مصادر ترجمته.
Note / Clarification: (3) In our manuscripts this has been corrupted into "al-Hubab". The correct reading has been established from "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" of al-Bukhari 7/ 89 - 90, where he mentions this report through two routes from Sharik bin al-Khattab; he is also named so in the sources of his biography (tarjamah).
(4) إسناده محتمل للتحسين من أجل عتبة بن صعصعة، فهو -وإن لم يرو عنه غير شريك بن الخَطَّاب- ذكره ابن حبان في ثقات التابعين 5/ 250.
Grading: (4) Its chain can possibly be graded hasan (tahsin), on account of 'Utbah bin Sa'sa'ah. Although no one other than Sharik bin al-Khattab narrated from him, Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the Successors in "al-Thiqat" 5/ 250.
وأخرجه البخاري تعليقًا في "تاريخه الكبير" 7/ 89 - 90 عن شيخين من شيوخه، عن شريك بن الخطاب، به.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari narrated it in mu'allaq form (ta'liqan) in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" 7/ 89 - 90 from two of his shaykhs, they from Sharik bin al-Khattab, in the same way.
