Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5675

It is narrated from Abu Jarwah al-Mazini that I heard Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both), with Ali saying to him: "O Zubayr! I ask you by Allah, did you not hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: 'You will fight me while you are the one wronging me'?" He replied: "Yes indeed, but I had forgotten."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) This man is named thus (Abu Jarwah) in the author's (al-Hakim's) work, and likewise in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" 9/ 21, but in all the other sources of the takhrij of this report he is named "Abu Jarw" (without ta' marbutah at the end). This is what Abu Zur'ah and Abu Hatim judged correct (as quoted from them by Ibn Abi Hatim in "Bayan Khata' Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari fi Tarikhihi", after "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" 9/ 152); Ibn 'Asakir 18/ 408 also judged it correct, and it appears so in Abu Ahmad al-Hakim's "al-Kuna" 3/ 200.

Grading: (2) This narration is "qawi" (strong) through other supporting reports, as has passed, but this chain is "da'if" (weak) because of 'Abdullah bin Muhammad al-Raqashi (Ibn 'Abd al-Malik bin Muslim).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bukhari said of him: "fihi nazar" (he is open to question), and Abu Hatim said: "His hadith is open to question". His grandfather 'Abd al-Malik bin Muslim is "majhul" (unknown); no one narrated from him except his grandson 'Abdullah bin Muhammad.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 6/ 415 from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, from Imam Abu al-Walid alone, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" 9/ 21 as mu'allaq (without a full chain). Ya'qub bin Sufyan narrated it in his "Mashyakhah" (30) from Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Malik bin Muslim al-Raqashi, and Abu Ya'la (666) via Abu 'Asim al-Dahhak bin Makhlad. Both of them narrate it from 'Abdullah bin Muhammad al-Raqashi, in the same way.
