Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This narration is "qawi" (strong) through other supporting reports, but this particular chain is "da'if" (weak) because Muhammad bin Sulayman al-'Abid is majhul (unknown).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ya'la bin 'Ubayd al-Tanafisi (who is thiqah) contradicted him in its chain (in Ibn Abi Shaybah 15/ 283, Ishaq bin Rahawayh's "Musnad" as cited in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" 4454, al-'Uqayli's "al-Du'afa'" 1000, and Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" 18/ 409 and 411 - 412). He narrated it from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, from "'Abd al-Salam", a man of his clan, who said: 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) met privately with al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of the Camel; and he mentioned something similar in brief. Al-Bukhari said (as quoted by al-'Uqayli): His hearing from the two of them is not evident. And al-Daraqutni stated firmly in "al-'Ilal" (454 and 541) that it is "mursal". We say: this 'Abd al-Salam is majhul (unknown), and al-Daraqutni named him "'Abd al-Salam bin 'Abdullah bin Jabir al-Ahmasi".
Important point: In any case, this report has numerous routes by which it is strengthened. Among them are the report of Abu Harb bin Abi al-Aswad and the report of Abu Jarwah al-Mazini, which come later in the author's (al-Hakim's) work.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the report of Nadhir al-Dabbi, in al-Baladhuri's "Ansab al-Ashraf" 3/ 49 - 50 and 9/ 430, and Ibn 'Asakir 18/ 408 - 409 and 412.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" for purposes of corroboration and support.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the report of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, in Abu al-'Arab al-Qayrawani's "al-Mihan" pp. 103 - 104, and Ibn 'Asakir 18/ 412, 413 and 421.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" for purposes of corroboration and support.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Among them also is the "mursal" of al-Zuhri, in al-Baladhuri 3/ 51 - 52 and al-Tabari's "Tarikh" 4/ 508 - 509, and its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy). Also the "mursal" of Qatadah, in Ma'mar's "Jami'" (20430), al-Tabari's "Tarikh" 4/ 501 - 502 and al-Bayhaqi's "al-Dala'il" 6/ 414, and its narrators too are thiqah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the "mursal" of al-Hakam bin 'Utaybah, in the "Musnads" of Ishaq bin Rahawayh and Ahmad bin Mani' (as in al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" 4403/ 1 and 2), and its narrators too are thiqah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the narration of al-Aswad bin Qays from a man who saw al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), in Ibn Abi Shaybah 15/ 283, al-Dulabi's "al-Kuna" (67) and Ibn 'Asakir 18/ 406.
Important point: Therefore al-Dhahabi's statement in his "Talkhis" that "this hadith is open to question" is not to be conceded to him.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has come with a "sahih chain" from Ibn 'Abbas, in Ibn Sa'd 3/ 102 and al-Baladhuri's "Ansab al-Ashraf" 9/ 430 - 431, that Ibn 'Abbas came to al-Zubayr and said: "Where is Safiyyah bint 'Abd al-Muttalib, when you fight with your sword against 'Ali bin Abi Talib bin 'Abd al-Muttalib?!" The narrator said: So al-Zubayr turned back, and Ibn Jurmuz met him and killed him. Then Ibn 'Abbas came to 'Ali and asked: Where will the killer of Ibn Safiyyah (al-Zubayr) go? 'Ali said: To the Fire.
Details of the narration: Thus it has come in the narration of Ibn 'Abbas that it was he (Ibn 'Abbas) who said to al-Zubayr what made him turn away from the people of the Camel. And it is not impossible that both 'Ali and Ibn 'Abbas reminded him and that he then turned back.
