Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5670

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Awn that he wept (at the mention of these Companions) and said: These were the best of people, and they were martyred. Then he said: Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) turned upon his killer and had overpowered him, whereupon he (the killer) said: "I remind you of Allah," so Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) held back from him. He did this several times. But when he betrayed Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) and struck him, Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May Allah destroy you! You remind others of Allah and then forget Him yourself."
