Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5665

Sayyiduna Urwah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his father (Sayyiduna al-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of the Camel, Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) called his son Abdullah and, giving him his final instructions, said: "O my dear son! Today is a day on which either a wrongdoer or a wronged one will be killed. By Allah! If I am killed, I will be killed only as one who has been wronged. By Allah! I did not do this (wrong) nor did I do that. O my son! Take care of my debt, for there is nothing that concerns me more than my debt, and it is one million two hundred thousand (dirhams)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) Its chain is "sahih", even though in form it is "irsal", since 'Urwah was at that time too young to be present at the Battle of the Camel;
Technical note / Defect ('illah): but this incident was related to 'Urwah by his brother 'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr, as occurs in the narration of al-Bukhari (3129), where he narrated it via Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah, from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, from "'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr", who said: "When al-Zubayr stood on the day of the Camel he called me, and I stood at his side, and he said …" and he mentioned it.
Details of the narration: Moreover, it has also been narrated as "mawsul" (connected) from 'Aththam. That is with Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" 2/ 415, from Abu Bishr Bakr bin Khalaf, from 'Aththam bin 'Ali, from Hisham, from his father, from "'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Except that Abu Usamah differed from 'Aththam on the amount of al-Zubayr's debt. Abu Usamah said: 'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr said: "I calculated the debt he owed and found it to be two million two hundred thousand." He made the calculation of the debt the doing of 'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr, not that al-Zubayr told his son 'Abdullah its amount. And Abu Usamah is more reliable (athbat) and of higher standing than 'Aththam bin 'Ali.
