Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 562

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uwaym bin Sa'idah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the people of Quba: "Allah Almighty has praised you most excellently in the matter of purification," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "In it are men who love to purify themselves," until the verse was completed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them: "What is this purification?" They said: "We know of nothing except that we had Jewish neighbours who used to wash their private parts after relieving themselves, so we too began washing as they did."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: The text between the square brackets [ ] was blank in the original manuscripts; we completed it from "Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah" (83), where it is narrated via Isma'il bin Abi Uways, and it is the same in other sources as well.
Grading: The chain of this hadith is very weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isma'il bin Abi Uways, his father (Abu Uways 'Abd Allah bin 'Abd Allah) and Shurahbil bin Sa'd have all been criticised, the weakest of them being Shurahbil. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar wrote in "Tahdhib al-Tahdhib" that Shurahbil's having heard from 'Uwaym bin Sa'idah is questionable.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (24/15485) through Husayn bin Muhammad, from Abu Uways, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: In this connection, see the narration of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), which will come later at no. (684).
