Salih al-Hafiz Jazarah states that Fadlak al-Razi said to me: "When you go to Nishapur, you will be received by an elder whose face is handsome, whose clothing is fine, whose riding is splendid and whose speech is excellent; then know that he is Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli. And the first thing you ask him about should be the hadith narrated by Shu'bah from Yahya bin Sabih," and he mentioned this hadith. Salih said: As it happened, when I entered Nishapur for the first time, a man of exactly this description received me. I asked about him, and the people told me that this was Muhammad bin Yahya. I greeted him with salam and he returned it, and I followed him until he dismounted at his lodging. I said: "Will the Shaykh show me his books?" He brought out some juz' (booklets) and said: "Wait until I go out for the Zuhr prayer." Then when he came out, he gave the adhan and the iqamah and led the prayer, then sat in his mihrab. I read before him what I had written, then I said to him: "There is a hadith that Fadlak al-Razi conveyed to me through the Shaykh's chain." He said: "Present it." I said: "Sa'id bin Amir narrated to you, (saying) Shu'bah narrated to us," and I related the whole hadith. He smiled and said to me: "O young man! One who makes such a (fine) selection of hadith as you have made and reads as you read knows that Sa'id bin Amir does not narrate a hadith like this." I said: "Yes, (in fact) it was Sa'id bin Wasil who narrated it to you?" He said: "Yes, Sa'id bin Wasil narrated it to us."

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The word "rajul" had dropped out of our manuscripts; we have restored it from the Mahmudiyyah manuscript (al-Mayman edition).
