Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5566

Qaza'ah bin Yahya narrates from Sayyiduna Habib bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Visit at intervals (skipping days), and it will increase love."

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (4) In (S) and (M) this word is corrupted into "al-Basri".

Grading: (5) This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi" on account of its supporting reports; however, this particular chain is "da'if" (weak) because of the weakness of Sulayman bin Abi Karimah and Muhammad bin Makhlad al-Ru'ayni.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (3535), "al-Awsat" (3052), "al-Saghir" (296) and "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (3563), and by Ibn 'Adi (3/ 262), Tammam al-Razi in his "Fawa'id" (64), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2166), Ibn 'Asakir (22/ 357-358) and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-'Ilal al-Mutanahiyah" (1239), through several routes from Azhar bin Zufar, with this chain.
Note / Clarification: Al-Mundhiri said in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib": This hadith has been narrated from a group of Companions, and more than one of the hadith masters took care to gather its routes and discuss them. Like al-Bazzar, I did not find a sahih route for it; rather, it has hasan chains with al-Tabarani and others.
General principle: Al-Sakhawi wrote in "al-Maqasid al-Hasanah" (537): Abu Nu'aym devoted a separate work to its routes, and then our shaykh (meaning Ibn Hajar) did so in "al-Inarah bi-Turuq Ghibb al-Ziyarah"; by the combination of them all the hadith is strengthened.

Note / Clarification: The words "zur ghibban" (visit at intervals) mean: visit your brother from time to time, and do not make a habit of visiting him every day (so that affection remains).
