Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5567

Abu Hubayrah narrates from Sayyiduna Habib bin Maslamah al-Fihri (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was one whose supplications were answered, that he was appointed commander of an army, and he passed through the mountain passes. When he reached the enemy, he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When a group gathers, and some of them supplicate while others say Amin, Allah Almighty surely answers them." Then he praised and extolled Allah Almighty and made this supplication: 'Allahumma ihqin dima'ana, waj'al ujurana ujur al-shuhada'' (O Allah, keep our blood safe, and grant us a reward equal to that of the martyrs). While they were in this state, the commander of the enemy (al-Hunbat) dismounted and came into the tent of Habib (may Allah be pleased with him).
An account of the virtues of Sayyiduna al-Miqdad bin Amr al-Kindi (may Allah be pleased with him), who was also called Ibn al-Aswad.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In (Z) and (B) it is "al-ba'd" (with the definite article), while in (M) and al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis" it is "ba'd" (indefinite). What we have established is from (S), which agrees with al-Bayhaqi's narration in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (7/ 113) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) What we have established is from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis". In (Z) and (B) it is "al-habbat", which is a corruption. In (S) and (M) it is "al-haybat", with a ya' instead of the nun; Radi al-Din al-Saghani recorded it that way in "al-'Ubab al-Zakhir", and the author of "al-Qamus" followed him, but al-Zabidi declared it a mistake in "Taj al-'Arus", and it is as he said. For it was recorded with a nun by both Abu Musa al-Madini in "al-Majmu' al-Mughith fi Gharibay al-Qur'an wa al-Hadith" (3/ 513) and Ibn al-Athir in "al-Nihayah" (5/ 278), although the manuscripts of the two books differ over whether the ha' takes kasra or damma, and in "Lisan al-'Arab" it takes fatha.
Note / Clarification: Al-Tabarani explained it after his narration in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (3536) as meaning, in the Roman (Greek) language, the commander of the army.

Grading: (3) Its chain is "da'if" (weak) because it is munqati' (broken).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hubayrah (Abd Allah bin Hubayrah bin As'ad al-Misri) did not reach Habib bin Maslamah. As for Ibn Lahi'ah (Abd Allah), the narration of the 'Abadilah from him is acceptable (la ba'sa biha), and among them is Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Muqri' (Abd Allah bin Yazid); so the remaining issue is the break in the chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (7/ 113), and through him Ibn 'Asakir (12/ 77), from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (3536), and through him Ibn 'Asakir (12/ 77), from Bishr bin Musa.
Note / Clarification: "Darraba al-durub" means: he entered the enemy's land in the territory of the Romans; every entry-way into Roman territory is called a "darb".
Note / Clarification: "Al-suradiq" means anything that surrounds something, whether a wall or a tent.
