(2). It is narrated from Atiyyah bin Qays and Rashid bin Sa'd that they both said: The Romans advanced against Habib bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was in Armenia. He wrote to Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asking for reinforcements. Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) about this, so Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to the governor of Iraq ordering him to reinforce Habib. So he reinforced them with the people of Iraq and appointed Salman bin Rabi'ah al-Bahili as their commander. They set out intending to help Habib (may Allah be pleased with him), but before they reached them, Habib and his companions encountered the enemy, and Allah Almighty granted them victory. Then when Salman and his companions reached Habib (may Allah be pleased with him), they asked to be made partners in the spoils of war and said: "We came to reinforce you." But the people of Syria said: "You did not take part in the fighting, so you have no share with us." Habib (may Allah be pleased with him) also refused to make them partners, and he and his companions kept hold of their spoils. The people of Syria and the people of Iraq quarrelled over this, until a major incident (a battle) almost broke out between them. Then some of the people of Iraq composed this verse: "If you kill Salman, we will kill your Habib, and if you set off towards Ibn Affan (Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him), we too will set off." Abu Bakr al-Ghassani said: I have heard that this was the very first enmity that arose between the people of Syria and the people of Iraq.

Grading: (2) This report is hasan, although this chain is weak because of the weakness of Abu Bakr al-Ghassani (Abu Bakr bin Abd Allah bin Abi Maryam). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ishaq al-Fazari: he is Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin al-Harith. We say: this story is also narrated through two other routes in a similar way, and both of them are munqati' (broken), but by the combination of these three routes the report is strengthened, and Allah knows best. It is not unlikely that 'Atiyyah bin Qays witnessed the story, since he was born around the year 17 AH; as for Rashid bin Sa'd, his having witnessed it is doubtful. Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (6/ 355), and through him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (12/ 76-77), from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this chain. After it Ibn 'Asakir said: "Ibn al-Mubarak has been dropped from it, though he is necessary." Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: that is, the mention of Ibn al-Mubarak has dropped between Abu Ishaq al-Fazari and Abu Bakr al-Ghassani. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Abu 'Arubah al-Harrani in "al-Awa'il" (130), and through him Ibn 'Asakir (12/ 76), from al-Musayyab bin Wadih, from Abu Ishaq al-Fazari, from Ibn al-Mubarak, from Abu Bakr al-Ghassani, from 'Atiyyah bin Qays, from Rashid bin Sa'd. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn 'Asakir said: His saying "from 'Atiyyah, from Rashid" is an error; the correct form is "from 'Atiyyah and Rashid" (from both of them), as in the narration of al-Hakim. Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir recorded it (12/ 74) through the route of Sa'id bin Abd al-Aziz, and (12/ 75) through the route of Ibn Abi Dhi'b. Both of them mentioned the story in a similar way, but their narration is munqati' (broken). Reference / Source: Al-Waqidi also mentioned it, as in "Tarikh al-Tabari" (4/ 248), but in mursal form without a chain.
