Mus'ab bin Abdullah al-Zubayri states that Habib bin Maslamah bin Malik al-Akbar bin Wahb bin Tha'labah bin Wa'ilah bin Amr bin Shayban bin Muharib bin Fihr (this is his lineage). He was a noble Companion who had heard hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He was called "Habib al-Rum" (Habib of the Romans), because he frequently entered the lands of the Romans (for jihad). Mus'ab said that Shurayh bin al-Harith composed these verses about him: "Listen! Whoever is named Habib, even if his manliness is evident, let him be a ransom for Habib of Banu Fihr. He is a valiant chief who leads the horses in such a way as if they (the horses) were treading not on fragments of pebbles but on blazing embers."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
7/ 385. Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) We established it with a tha' (three dots) from (Z) and (B), while in (S) and (M) it is undotted. It was recorded with a tha' by Muhammad bin Habib al-Baghdadi in "Mukhtalif al-Qaba'il wa Mu'talifuha" (p. 98), al-Husayn bin Ali al-Maghribi in "al-Inas fi 'Ilm al-Ansab" (p. 263) and Majd al-Din Ibn al-Athir in "Jami' al-Usul" in the biographies section (12/ 289). Others differed from them and said "Wa'ilah", among them al-Daraqutni in "al-Mu'talif wa al-Mukhtalif" (4/ 288), Ibn Hazm in "al-Jamharah" (p. 178) and Ibn Makula in "al-Ikmal" (7/ 385).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In (S) and (M) this is corrupted into "hamahim", and in (Z) and (B) misspelled as "hajim". The correct text has been established from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis". "Al-jamr al-jahim" means embers whose blaze has become intense. In Mus'ab al-Zubayri's "Nasab Quraysh" (p. 447) it is "fahim al-jamr" (black embers).
