Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5555

It is narrated from Imran bin Hittan that he said: I came to Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) and found him sitting alone in the mosque, wrapped in a black cloak with his knees drawn up. I asked: "O Abu Dharr! What is this solitude?" He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Solitude is better than an evil companion, and a righteous companion is better than solitude. Dictating (or speaking) good is better than silence, and silence is better than dictating (or speaking) evil."

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) It is sahih as mawquf, from the saying of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), but it is not authentic as marfu'. Perhaps this is what al-Dhahabi meant in his "Talkhis" when he said: "It is not authentic, nor did al-Hakim grade it sahih."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement in its chain: Muhammad bin al-Haytham al-Qadi narrated it from al-Haytham bin Jamil, as in the author's (al-Hakim's) narration here, and al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (4639) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A group contradicted him and narrated it from al-Haytham bin Jamil, from Sharik (Ibn Abd Allah al-Nakha'i), from Abu al-Muhajjal (Rudayni bin Murrah; other names have also been given for him), from Mi'fas bin 'Imran bin Hittan, from Ibn al-Shaniyyah (Abd Allah), from Abu Dharr al-Ghifari. It was recorded thus by al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna" (1734) from Muhammad bin 'Awf al-Ta'i; by al-Khara'iti in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (753), al-Quda'i in "Musnad al-Shihab" (1266) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (66/ 215) through the route of Sa'dan bin Yazid; and by Abu al-Shaykh al-Asbahani [as in al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "al-Ghara'ib al-Multaqatah" 2836] through the route of Ahmad bin al-Furat. All three of them (Muhammad, Sa'dan and Ahmad) narrate it from al-Haytham bin Jamil.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Likewise it was narrated by 'Awn bin Sallam [with Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" 1737] and Muhammad bin Sa'id bin Sulayman al-Asbahani [as indicated by Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 59/ 356], both from Sharik. However, both of them made it the saying of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, mawquf on him, and this is more likely (to be correct).
Grading: For Sufyan al-Thawri also narrated it in mawquf form in his narration from Abu al-Muhajjal [Ibn Abi Shaybah 13/ 341, Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-'Uzlah wa al-Infirad" 163, Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Zuhd" 65]. However, Sufyan contradicted Sharik in its chain and narrated it from Abu al-Muhajjal, from Ibn 'Imran bin Hittan, from his father, who said: "Abu Dharr said" (mentioning it as mawquf). So what is correct regarding this report is that it is a mawquf saying of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, and Allah the Exalted knows best.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It seems that Sharik al-Nakha'i's version of its chain is more correct than that of Sufyan al-Thawri, because Sharik's narration mentions the story of Abd Allah bin al-Shaniyyah coming to Abu Dharr and his conversation with him. 'Imran bin Hittan did not reach Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (so there is a break), and Abd Allah bin al-Shaniyyah is a Successor whose trustworthiness is not reported from anyone, and he is not known outside this report, so he is "majhul" (unknown); but he is not alone in narrating it.
Reference / Source: For Ibn Abi al-Dunya recorded it in "al-'Uzlah wa al-Infirad" (126) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (4638) through the route of al-Ahnaf bin Qays, from Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, in mawquf form.
Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Khara'iti in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (476, 810) - and through him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (66/ 215) - from al-Hasan bin 'Arafah, from 'Abbad bin 'Abbad al-Muhallabi, from Yunus bin 'Ubayd: "A man came to Abu Dharr", and he mentioned the like of it in mawquf form.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but it is mursal: Yunus bin 'Ubayd did not reach Abu Dharr.
