Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5554

Al-Muntasir bin Umarah bin Abi Dharr al-Ghifari narrates from his father, who narrates from his grandfather (Sayyiduna Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the time (of the Hour) draws near, the wearing of the taylasan (a particular kind of shawl) will become widespread, trade will abound, wealth will increase, the wealthy man will be considered great because of his wealth, indecency will become common, there will be the rule of children, women will become many, the ruler will be unjust, there will be cheating in measure and weight, a man will find raising a puppy better than raising his own child, the elderly will not be respected, the young will not be shown mercy, and children of fornication will become many, until a man will commit indecency with a woman in the middle of the road, and the best of them in that time will be the one who says: If only you two had moved aside from the road. They will wear the skins of sheep over the hearts of wolves (that is, outwardly pious and inwardly oppressive). In that time the best of them will be the one who compromises (in religion, with flattery and smooth talk)."
Sayf bin Miskin is alone in narrating this hadith from al-Mubarak bin Fadalah, and al-Mubarak bin Fadalah is a trustworthy (thiqah) narrator.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This chain is "wahin" (very weak) because of Sayf bin Miskin, for he is very weak, as al-Dhahabi said in his "Talkhis", adding: "Muntasir and his father are both majhul (unknown)." And it is as he said.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Abd al-Baqi bin Qani' in "Juz' min Hadithihi" (55) and al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (4860) from Abd al-Warith bin Ibrahim al-'Askari, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But Ibn Qani' added "al-Hasan" (al-Basri) between al-Mubarak and al-Muntasir!
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded in "al-Kabir" (10556) and "al-Awsat" (4861) from Abd al-Warith bin Ibrahim, from Sayf bin Miskin, from Mubarak bin Fadalah, from al-Hasan, from 'Utayy al-Sa'di, from Ibn Mas'ud... and he mentioned some of the signs of the Hour that are found in the hadith of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This shows the reason for the mention of al-Hasan in the hadith of Abu Dharr with Ibn Qani', and that Sayf was also inconsistent (idtirab) in it. And al-Hasan is al-Basri.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: But it is supported by what came from Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman through another route, with al-Mu'afa bin 'Imran al-Mawsili in "al-Zuhd" (19), and through him Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "al-Hilyah" (5/ 187) and Abu 'Amr al-Dani in "al-Sunan al-Waridah fi al-Fitan" (233, 438), with the wording: "The Hour will not be established until the father of five (children) wishes they were four, the father of four that they were three, the father of three that they were two, the father of two that he had one, and the father of one that he had no child."

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Such a thing cannot be said from personal opinion, so it has the ruling of marfu'. It will also come in marfu' form through another route with the author under number (8803), but that is not authentic.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for its meaning is the hadith of Abd Allah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) with al-Tirmidhi (2405), who called it "hasan gharib", with the wording: "Allah the Exalted said: I have created a creation whose tongues are sweeter than honey and whose hearts are more bitter than aloes..."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): What is correct is that this part of the hadith is among what was transmitted from the People of the Book, for the like of it is authentically established from Nawf al-Bikali, in the Tafsir section of Ibn Wahb's "al-Jami'" (28), and through him al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" (2/ 313-314).

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For the best of them in that time being the compromiser (al-mudahin) there is a supporting report from the saying of Abu al-Jald Jaylan bin Farwah with al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna" (775). He is a trustworthy Successor known for reading the books of the People of the Book. It has also been narrated in marfu', connected form with the mention of Ma'qil bin Yasar, with al-Harith bin Abi Usamah [as in "Bughyat al-Bahith" 768] and others, but it is not authentic.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: It was said: O Messenger of Allah, when will enjoining good and forbidding evil be abandoned? He said: "When there appears among you what appeared among the Children of Israel." It was said: And what is that, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "When compromise (al-idman) appears among your best, indecency among your worst, kingship passes to your young (the petty), and knowledge of the religion (fiqh) to your basest." It was recorded by Ibn Waddah in "al-Bida'" (195), al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (3350), al-Tabarani in "al-Shamiyyin" (1547, 3368), Abu Tahir al-Dhahabi in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (1490) and others.
Grading: Its chain is hasan.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) The text between the square brackets had dropped from our manuscripts, and we restored it from al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (4639), where he narrated it from al-Hakim with this same chain. It also appears correctly in al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah" (17587).
