Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5553

Abu Uthman al-Nahdi narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Abu Dharr! How will you be when you are left among worthless and wicked people?" And he (peace and blessings be upon him) interlaced his fingers. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Then what do you command me? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Be patient, be patient, be patient. Deal kindly with people according to their manners, and oppose them in their evil deeds."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) The word "kayfa" had dropped from our manuscripts, and we restored it from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak".

Grading: (1) This chain is da'if (weak) because of Yazid bin Rabi'ah (al-Rahabi al-San'ani), for he is weak and "munkar al-hadith" (his hadith are denounced).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Zuhd" (192) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (470) from Ahmad bin Khulayd al-Kindi al-Halabi, from Abu Tawbah al-Rabi' bin Nafi'.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bazzar (4165) from Ibrahim bin Sa'id al-Jawhari, and by al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (1932) from Muhammad bin Ahmad bin al-Walid al-Antaki; both from Abu Tawbah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, both of them made it part of the Musnad of Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) instead of Abu Dharr. Al-'Uqayli said: This is narrated with a chain other than this one, and with wording different from this, through a "salih" (acceptable) route.
Note / Clarification: We say: he is alluding to the hadith of Abd Allah bin 'Amr bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them both), which has passed under number (2704), with the wording: "How will you be in a time - or soon a time will come - when people will be sifted thoroughly, and the dregs of the people will remain, whose covenants and trusts have become confused, and they will differ and be like this" - and he interlaced his fingers. They said: Then how shall we be, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "Take what you recognise (as good), leave what you reject, attend to your own particular affairs, and leave the affairs of the common people."
