Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5537

Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Zayd relates that he said: "My father Abdullah bin Zayd died in Madinah in the year 32 AH, when he was 64 years old, and the Commander of the Faithful Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) led his funeral prayer."
Imam al-Hakim says: Abdullah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) is famous for the hadith of the adhan, which the scholars of Islam have circulated with acceptance, and it was not recorded in the two Sahihs because of the disagreement of the narrators in its chains. The best narration on this is that of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab. Some of our Imams imagined that Sa'id did not meet Abdullah bin Zayd, but that is not so, for Sa'id bin al-Musayyab was among those who acted as mediators for reconciliation between Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both), and Abdullah bin Zayd died in the last period of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). The hadith of al-Zuhri from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab is well known; it was narrated by Yunus bin Yazid, Ma'mar bin Rashid, Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah, Muhammad bin Ishaq and others. As for the narrations of the people of Kufah on this topic, they all revolve around the hadith of Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla: some of them said: "From Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal or Abdullah bin Zayd", and some said: "From Abd al-Rahman, from Abdullah bin Zayd". As for the narrations of Abdullah bin Zayd's descendants from him through their forefathers, their chains are not sound. And Abdullah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) other than this (adhan) hadith:

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: (1) This narration is in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (3/ 498) from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, in the same way.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In the year in which Abd Allah bin Zayd died, Sa'id bin al-Musayyab was about 17 years old, and both of them were in Madinah, so how could they not have met? Indeed, Ahmad bin Hanbal stated categorically that Sa'id bin al-Musayyab reached the time of Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and heard from him, while Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred nine (9) years before the death of Abd Allah bin Zayd.
Reference / Source: It is authentically established in Umar bin Shabbah's "Tarikh al-Madinah" (3/ 1044) and elsewhere from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, who said: "I witnessed Ali and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both) when Satan had stirred up some discord between them. By Allah, they did not persist in anything (wrong); if I wished, I could tell what each of them said to the other. Then they did not get up from their place until each of them had sought forgiveness for the other."

Reference / Source: (3) His narration is with Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1937) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (1/ 414).

Reference / Source: (4) His narration is with Abd al-Razzaq (1774) and Ibn Sa'd (1/ 212).

Reference / Source: (5) His narration is with Umar bin Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah" (3/ 960), Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah" (1/ 260), Ibn Shahin in "Nasikh al-Hadith wa Mansukhuhu" (177) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Kubra" (1/ 422).

Reference / Source: (6) His narration is with Ahmad (26/ 16477) and others.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (7) The narration of this report by Sa'id bin al-Musayyab with those mentioned above is apparently "mursal", except for the narration of Ibn Ishaq; and their (the majority's) version is more correct than his, so what is "mahfuz" (preserved) is that it is mursal. However, this hadith was narrated by Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Zayd bin Abd Rabbihi from his father (Abd Allah bin Zayd) in connected form with a hasan chain, with Ahmad [26/ (16478)] and others.
Grading: Al-Dhuhli, al-Bukhari and others graded as sahih this narration of Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Zayd from his father.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) We did not find any narration of this hadith in which there is doubt between the mention of Mu'adh bin Jabal and Abd Allah bin Zayd.
Reference / Source: Rather, it is sometimes narrated with the mention of Mu'adh bin Jabal, as recorded by Ahmad [36/ (22027), (22123), (22124)], Abu Dawud (507) and others.
Reference / Source: And at other times it is narrated with the mention of Abd Allah bin Zayd, as recorded by Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the third volume (al-sifr al-thalith) of his "Tarikh" (1396), Ibn Khuzaymah (380), al-Shashi in his "Musnad" [(1081), (1083), (1804)] and others.
Reference / Source: And sometimes it is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, who said: "The Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated to us", as recorded by Ibn Abi Shaybah (1/ 203), Ibn Khuzaymah (383), al-Tahawi in "Ahkam al-Qur'an" [(195), (196)], al-Bayhaqi (1/ 420) and others.
Grading: This is the most correct of the narrations from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla.
Reference / Source: And sometimes it is narrated from Ibn Abi Layla in mursal form, without mentioning anyone (any Companion), as recorded by Abd al-Razzaq (1788), Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn in "al-Salah" (180), Ibn Khuzaymah (382) and al-Tahawi in "Ahkam al-Qur'an" (194).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli, Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla did not reach Abd Allah bin Zayd, as Ibn Khuzaymah transmitted from him. And according to Ibn Khuzaymah he did not hear from Mu'adh bin Jabal (either), as al-Bayhaqi transmitted from him; the same is also transmitted from al-Tirmidhi, as in Ibn al-'Iraqi's "Tuhfat al-Tahsil" (p. 205).

Reference / Source: (2) It was recorded by al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (5/ 183) in mu'allaq form (without a full chain), al-Tahawi in "Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar" (1/ 142), al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (837), al-Daraqutni (943), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (4157), al-Bayhaqi (1/ 399), Ibn 'Asakir (4/ 340) and al-Diya' in "al-Mukhtarah" [9/ (347)], through the route of Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Zayd, from his father, from his grandfather.
