Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) This report is "hasan" with this wording, if Allah wills, although this chain is da'if because of the weakness of Dawud bin 'Ata' and the unknown status of Sa'idah bin 'Ubaydullah al-Muzani.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, this report has been narrated through another route better than this one, from Zayd bin Aslam and Ibn Ishaq, from someone (unnamed) who narrated it to them from Ibn 'Abbas. Were it not for the vagueness of the narrator from Ibn 'Abbas, this chain would be hasan. Also, for the story of the prayer for rain (istisqa'), though without 'Umar's sermon, there is a third route from Zayd bin Aslam, from his father, which has some criticism. But by the combination of these three routes the report of Zayd bin Aslam can be considered hasan, and Zayd bin Aslam may have had more than one shaykh for it, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar indicated in "Fath al-Bari" (4/ 119). And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Du'a'" (2211), Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (26/ 324-328 and 328-329) and in "Mu'jam Shuyukhihi" (881), and Ibn al-'Adim in "Bughyat al-Talab fi Tarikh Halab" (8/ 3748-3749), via al-Zubayr bin Bakkar with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Lalaka'i in "Karamat al-Awliya'" (88) via Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Hatim, from Muhammad bin 'Uzayr, from Salamah bin Rawh, from 'Uqayl bin Khalid, from Zayd bin Aslam and Ibn Ishaq, from someone (unnamed) who informed them, from Ibn 'Abbas. Some of them added to the hadith what others did not. He said: "In the year of al-Ramadah (the year of famine), 'Umar bin al-Khattab prayed for rain", and he mentioned something similar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the printed edition "Ibn Ishaq" has been distorted into "Abu Ishaq". This is an error, which we have corrected from the words of Ibn Abi Hatim himself in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil", where he mentioned that 'Uqayl bin Khalid narrates from Muhammad bin Ishaq and made no mention of Abu Ishaq. This Muhammad bin Ishaq is Ibn Yasar, the author of the Sirah.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (4/ 14) via Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Abi Fudayk, from Hisham bin Sa'd, from Zayd bin Aslam, from his father, who said: 'Umar went out to pray for rain and took hold of the upper arms of al-'Abbas and said: "O Allah, this is the uncle of Your Prophet, so give us rain." The people had not left the place before they were given rain.
Grading: Its chain is hasan in corroborations and supporting reports.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is the hadith of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (1010): that whenever there was a drought, 'Umar bin al-Khattab would pray for rain through al-'Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib, saying: "O Allah, we used to seek means of approach (tawassul) to You through our Prophet and You would give us rain, and (now) we seek means of approach to You through the uncle of our Prophet, so give us rain." He said: And they would be given rain.
Details of the narration: Ibn 'Abd al-Barr made clear in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 558), and it is also in al-Zubayr bin Bakkar's "al-Ansab" as found in "Fath al-Bari" (4/ 119), that after his sermon 'Umar said: "O Abu al-Fadl ('Abbas), stand up and supplicate." So al-'Abbas stood up and said, and then he mentioned his supplication.
