Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi", although this chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Yazid bin Abi Ziyad (al-Hashimi by clientage, al-Kufi) is weak, and there is also disagreement over him regarding the chain of this hadith. But this report is narrated through other routes which together raise it to the level of hasan, as will come. As for his (peace and blessings be upon him) statement: "A man's paternal uncle is the twin (sinw) of his father", it is fully sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in [3/ (177)] and [29/ (17515)] from Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid with this same chain. He named the Companion "Abd al-Muttalib bin Rabi'ah", and both views (al-Muttalib or Abd al-Muttalib) have been stated about his name.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad [29/ (17516)] via Yazid bin 'Ata', al-Tirmidhi (3758) and al-Nasa'i (8120) via Abu 'Awanah al-Yashkuri, and Ibn Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah" (2/ 639) and Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the second part of his "Tarikh" (1512) via Khalid bin Abdullah. All three of them (Yazid, Abu 'Awanah and Khalid) narrate it from Yazid bin Abi Ziyad.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The students of Yazid bin Abi Ziyad were contradicted by Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, as found in Ahmad [3/ (1772)], Ibn Shabbah (2/ 639), Ya'qub al-Fasawi (1/ 496-497), al-Bazzar (1315), al-Ajurri (1762) and the author's own coming narrations (5522) and (7137). He narrated it from Yazid bin Abi Ziyad, from Abdullah bin al-Harith, from al-'Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib. In this way he dropped "al-Muttalib" as an intermediary and made it part of the Musnad of al-'Abbas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration will come at number (7136) via Abu Sabrah al-Nakha'i, from Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi, from al-'Abbas bin (Abd) al-Muttalib. Abu Sabrah is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition), and Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi's narration from al-'Abbas is munqati' (broken).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/ 109), Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1756), al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (4/ 12), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Ba'th wa al-Nushur" (7) and Ibn 'Asakir (26/ 337-338) via Sa'id al-Thawri (the father of Sufyan); by Abdullah bin Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1791) via Salamah bin Kuhayl; and by al-Lalaka'i in "Usul al-I'tiqad" (1687) via al-Ajlah bin Abdullah. All three of them (Sa'id, Salamah and al-Ajlah) narrate it from Abu al-Duha Muslim bin Subayh, that al-'Abbas said: "O Messenger of Allah, we perceive rancour in the faces of some people because of events that you inflicted on them." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They will never attain good until they love you for the sake of Allah and for the sake of my kinship. Do (the tribe of) Salham hope for my intercession while Banu Abd al-Muttalib do not hope for it!"
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, but it is munqati' between Abu al-Duha and al-'Abbas. "Salham" is a branch of the Qahtani tribe of Madhhij. Among the students of Sufyan al-Thawri, only Abu Hudhayfah Musa bin Mas'ud is alone in narrating it (from Sufyan, from his father, from Abu al-Duha) from Ibn 'Abbas in connected form, as found in Ibn Shabbah (2/ 640), al-Tabarani (12228), al-Bayhaqi (5, 6), al-Khatib (3/ 259), al-Shajari (1/ 154), Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani (39) and Ibn 'Asakir (26/ 337).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa' al-Kabir" (1667), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (2963), Qadi al-Maristan in his "Mashyakhah" (11) and Ibn 'Asakir (26/ 338) via Muhammad bin Yahya al-Hajari, from Abdullah bin al-Ajlah, from Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir, from Abu al-Duha, from Ibn 'Abbas. He too connected it by mentioning Ibn 'Abbas.
Grading: But this Muhammad bin Yahya is not thiqah, as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Mizan". And how could he be reliable when he has contradicted the other narrators from Abu al-Duha?!
Reference / Source: It was reported by al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (1763), al-Tha'labi in his "Tafsir" (8/ 313) and Ibn 'Asakir (26/ 303) from the narration of Yahya bin Kathir al-Asadi al-Kahili, from Salih bin Khabbab al-Fazari, from Abdullah bin Shaddad bin al-Had, who said: Al-'Abbas said, (and he mentioned something similar).
Grading: There is some weakness (lin) in Yahya bin Kathir, but his hadith is suitable for corroborations and supporting reports.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is also a narration from Abdullah bin Ja'far bin Abi Talib, which will come with the author at number (4/ 6560), but its chain is "talif" (extremely weak) and not fit for consideration.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): None of these routes contains the phrase "'ammu al-rajuli sinwu abihi" (a man's paternal uncle is like his father), except the route of Yazid bin Abi Ziyad. However, this phrase is authentically established from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Ahmad [14/ (8284)], Muslim (983) and others.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is also narrated from the hadith of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in Ahmad [2/ (725)] and al-Tirmidhi (3760); its narrators are thiqah, but there is a break (inqita') in it.
Note / Clarification: The phrase "asfara 'anhu" means: the anger left him.
Note / Clarification: The phrase "sinwu abihi" means: like his father and his counterpart. Originally it refers to two palm trees that grow out of a single root.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) Manuscripts (Z) and (B) have "wa-Yazid wa-lam yukharrijahu", and (S) has "wa-Yazid lam yukharrijahu". What we have established has been corrected from (M) and al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak".
