Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi". Although this chain is da'if because of the unknown status of Abdullah bin Abi Razin, the Messenger of Allah's (peace and blessings be upon him) confirming al-'Abbas in charge of the siqayah (the service of giving water to the pilgrims) is so well known among the biographers that there is no need to seek a chain for it. Nevertheless, some scholars have authenticated this hadith of Abu Razin, among them al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (Musnad 'Ali p. 233) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" [2/ (802)], while al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (1309) and al-Busiri in "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" (2084) declared it hasan.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (4/ 22), Ibn Abi Shaybah, Ishaq bin Rahawayh and Ahmad bin Mani' in their Musnads (as found in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" 1309), al-Bazzar (895), al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (Musnad 'Ali p. 233) and Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" [2/ (802)], via several routes from Qabisah bin 'Uqbah with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abu Ya'la in his "Musnad" (310) via Abu Ahmad Muhammad bin Abdullah bin al-Zubayr al-Zubayri, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Musa bin Abi 'A'ishah, from Abdullah bin Abi Razin, who said: 'Ali said to al-'Abbas, and he mentioned it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He mentioned it as mursal and did not mention Abu Razin (the father); rather he made it a mursal narration of his son Abdullah!
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for it is the mursal narration of Ibn Abi Mulaykah, found in Abd al-Razzaq (9073), and through him al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (8395): that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when he spoke to him about the key: "I have given you only that in which you bear a burden (turza'un), and I have not given you that from which you take (tarza'un)." That is: I have given you the siqayah because you incur expenses in it, and I have not given you (the keys of) the House. Its narrators are thiqah.
Reference / Source: Al-Waqidi mentioned it in his "Maghazi" (2/ 833) from his shaykhs, and through him al-Azraqi recorded it in "Akhbar Makkah" (p. 267). He mentioned that the one who asked this was al-'Abbas, not 'Ali bin Abi Talib.
Reference / Source: Ibn Jurayj and Ibn Ishaq also mentioned it in the account of Qusayy bin Kilab's guardianship of the House, as al-Azraqi narrated from them in "Akhbar Makkah" (p. 109). Both of them also mentioned that the one who asked for the custodianship (hijabah) was al-'Abbas, not 'Ali.
Reference / Source: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar quoted in "Fath al-Bari" (5/ 457) from al-Fakihi that he narrated via al-Sha'bi, who said: Al-'Abbas, 'Ali and Shaybah bin 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them) spoke about the siqayah and the hijabah, so Allah the Exalted revealed: ﴿أَجَعَلْتُمْ سِقَايَةَ الْحَاجِّ﴾ (Have you made the giving of water to the pilgrims) up to His words ﴿حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ اللَّهُ بِأَمْرِهِ﴾ (until Allah brings His command). So it seems that al-'Abbas and 'Ali each spoke to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about combining the hijabah with the siqayah. And Allah knows best.
Details of the narration: Al-Hafiz also quoted from al-Fakihi that he narrated via Ibn Abi Mulaykah, from Ibn 'Abbas, that: When al-'Abbas died, 'Ali wanted to take the siqayah, so Talhah said to him: I bear witness that I saw his (al-'Abbas's) father attending to it, while your father Abu Talib was encamped among his camels at al-Arak in 'Arafah. He said: So 'Ali refrained from (taking) the siqayah.
Reference / Source: It is established in "Sahih al-Bukhari" (1635), from the hadith of Abdullah bin 'Abbas, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) confirmed the siqayah in the hands of al-'Abbas. That was when he gave the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) Zamzam water to drink, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep working, for you are doing a righteous deed." Then he said: "Were it not that you would be overwhelmed (by people crowding in), I would come down and place the rope on this", meaning his blessed shoulder.
Reference / Source: In al-Bukhari (1634) and Muslim (1315) it is narrated from Ibn 'Umar that al-'Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to spend the nights of Mina in Makkah because of his (duty of) siqayah, and he gave him permission.
