Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In our manuscripts this name has been distorted into "Abdullah" (full form), which is wrong. We have corrected it to "'Ubaydullah" (diminutive). Its correction is based on Ibn Mandah's "Fath al-Bab" (biography 62), al-Sam'ani's "al-Ansab" (under the attribution al-Mudawwari), al-Dhahabi's "al-Mughni fi al-Du'afa'" (3949) and the narration of Ibn 'Asakir (26/ 369), where this name is given correctly.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In the manuscripts it is written "al-Basri" (with a ba'), and most likely it is a distortion of "al-Misri", because a group (such as Ibn Yunus al-Misri and al-Daraqutni) stated about Zayd bin al-Hasan that he was in Egypt, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar quoted in "Lisan al-Mizan" (3/ 551).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In the manuscripts it is written "nzd" (without the ya')! The correct word is "nazidu", as we have established from Ibn 'Asakir (26/ 369), where this report is with this same chain, and also from the other sources that recorded this statement of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading: (1) This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi", if Allah wills (but with the mention of Ubayy bin Ka'b in place of Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is da'if because of the weakness of Abu al-Qasim 'Ubaydullah bin Muhammad al-Iskandarani and his shaykh Abu Yahya Zayd bin al-Hasan al-Misri; also there is some weakness (lin) in Abd al-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam. He was contradicted by the trustworthy hafiz Ma'mar bin Rashid, who narrated it from Zayd bin Aslam as mursal (without mention of his father Aslam), and stated that the one who judged between al-'Abbas and 'Umar was Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (26/ 369-370) via Abu al-Qasim 'Ubaydullah bin Muhammad al-Iskandarani with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ishaq bin Rahawayh (as found in al-Busiri's "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" 2/ 946) via Abd al-Razzaq, from Ma'mar bin Rashid, from Zayd bin Aslam, as mursal.
Details of the narration: In it Ubayy bin Ka'b, instead of Hudhayfah, is named as the arbiter (judge), and it does not contain the story of the gutter spout (mizab) or 'Umar's granting al-'Abbas a more spacious house.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for the story of 'Umar and al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the house and the gutter spout is the mursal narration of Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, which the author will mention after this.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for the story of the house (without the gutter spout) is the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), found in Ibn Sa'd (4/ 20), Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (1/ 512), Abdullah bin Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1807), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (6/ 168) and Ibn 'Asakir (26/ 367). Its chain is da'if because it contains 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an, who is da'if in hadith.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Another supporting report for the story of the house is the mursal narration of Salim Abu al-Nadr, found in Ibn Sa'd (4/ 19), al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (4/ 22) and Ibn 'Asakir (26/ 370). Besides being mursal, it also contains a weak narrator.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for the story of the gutter spout (mizab) alone is the hadith of 'Ubaydullah bin 'Abbas, found in Ahmad [3/ (1790)] and elsewhere. Its narrators are "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable), but there is a break (inqita') in it; nevertheless, such a narration is suitable as a supporting report.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A further supporting report for this story is the mursal narration of Abu Harun Musa bin Abi 'Isa al-Madani, found in Abd al-Razzaq (15264), Abu Dawud's "al-Marasil" (406) and al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (4/ 19). Its narrators are thiqah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise the mursal narration of Abu Hasin 'Uthman bin 'Asim, found in al-Baladhuri's "Ansab al-Ashraf" (4/ 19), also supports it.
Grading: And its narrators are "la ba'sa bihim".

Note / Clarification: "Al-Zawra'" is the name of a place in Madinah which, in the early days of Islam, lay west of the Prophet's Mosque near the market of Madinah.
Note / Clarification: (1) That is, this is from the selection (intiqa') made by Abu 'Ali al-Hafiz from Abu Ja'far al-Baghdadi, for Abu 'Ali al-Hafiz has some hadiths which he selected from the narrations of Abu Ja'far al-Baghdadi; an example is hadith number (5351).
