(2). It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that al-Ala bin al-Hadrami sent eighty thousand (a large sum, of dirhams or dinars) from Bahrain to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); never before or after did more wealth than this come to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order, and it was spread out on a mat. Then the call to prayer was given, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and, standing, turned his attention to that wealth. People kept coming and he (peace and blessings be upon him) kept giving to them. On that day there was neither counting nor weighing; it was simply being given out by handfuls. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: "O Messenger of Allah! On the day of Badr I paid my own ransom and that of Aqil, and Aqil had no wealth, so give me some of this wealth." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take." So he scooped handfuls into his woollen cloak. Then he turned to leave but could not (lift it, because the load was too heavy), so he raised his head towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Have it lifted onto me." Hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was saying (at that time): "Of the promises Allah Almighty made, one has been fulfilled, and of the other I do not know. (Allah Almighty says:) 'O Prophet, say to those captives who are in your hands: If Allah knows any good in your hearts, He will give you better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you.' [Surah al-Anfal: 70] This wealth is certainly better than what was taken from me, and I do not know what will be done with me in the matter of forgiveness."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The one who said this is al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), as is made clear by the narration of others besides the author (al-Hakim).
Grading: (2) This hadith is hasan, although this chain is da'if because of the weakness of Musa bin Sahl bin Kathir. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the next chain he is corroborated by al-Hasan bin al-Harith al-Ahwazi, but he is majhul (unknown); 'Abdan alone narrates from him and no one declared him trustworthy. Both of them narrated this report from Humayd bin Hilal, from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, except that al-Hasan bin al-Harith added "Abu Burdah bin Abi Musa" as an intermediary between them. Both were contradicted by the trustworthy hafiz Muhammad bin Sa'd (author of "al-Tabaqat") in (4/ 14), where he narrated it from Hashim bin al-Qasim, from Sulayman bin al-Mughirah, from Humayd bin Hilal, that: "Al-'Ala' bin al-Hadrami sent", and so on; thus he made it a mursal narration of Humayd bin Hilal, and made clear that its last part, i.e. "amma ahadun" to the end, is the statement of al-'Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib. Likewise a group of trustworthy narrators narrated it from Sulayman bin al-Mughirah, from Humayd bin Hilal, as mursal, among them Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah [Ibn Abi Shaybah 14/ 85], 'Amr bin 'Asim al-Kilabi [Ya'qub bin Sufyan's "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" 1/ 503, and Ibn 'Asakir 26/ 294], and Shayban bin Farrukh [al-Baladhuri's "Futuh al-Buldan" p. 88]. So what is mahfuz in the narration of Humayd bin Hilal is that it is mursal, and that its last part is the statement of al-'Abbas. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Apart from the citing of the verse, it is supported by the hadith of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), which Imam al-Bukhari narrated in his "Sahih" [numbers (421) and (3165)] as a mu'allaq (suspended) report in the definitive form (sighat al-jazm). (5496). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For the statement of al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) at the end of the hadith and his citing of the verse as evidence, there are supporting reports, which were mentioned under hadith number (5496).
