Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5490

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): I was a slave of Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him). I had accepted Islam, Umm al-Fadl (may Allah be pleased with her) had also accepted Islam, and Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) had also become Muslim, but he used to conceal his Islam out of fear of his people. Abu Lahab had not taken part in the Battle of Badr; rather he had sent in his place al-As bin Hisham, who owed him a debt. He had said to him: "Go to this fight in my place and I will forgive you your debt," and so he did. When the news of the defeat at Badr arrived and Allah humiliated and disgraced Abu Lahab, I was at that time a weak man, and I used to carve cups in a chamber. By Allah, I was sitting in the chamber carving my cups, and Umm al-Fadl was with me, when that wicked Abu Lahab came dragging his feet and sat down by the tent-rope of the chamber, behind my back. The people began saying: This is Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith coming. Abu Lahab said: "O my nephew, come to me." So Abu Sufyan came and sat by him, and the people also came and stood around the two of them. Abu Lahab asked: "O my nephew, how did things go for the people in the battle?" He said: "Nothing at all. By Allah, no sooner did we meet them than we handed them our shoulders; they killed us however they wished and took us captive however they wished. And by Allah, I do not blame the people." Abu Lahab asked: "Why?" He said: "Because I saw men clothed in white on piebald horses. By Allah, they spared nothing, and nothing could stand before them." Abu Rafi' says: I lifted the curtain of the chamber and said: "By Allah, those were the angels!" At that Abu Lahab raised his hand and slapped me in the face. I grappled with him, but he lifted me up, threw me to the ground and sat on top of me. Seeing this, Umm al-Fadl got up, took one of the posts of the chamber and struck him on the head so hard that it left a very deep and ugly wound on his head, and she said: "O enemy of Allah, did you think him weak because his master is not here with him?" So he got up humiliated. By Allah, after that he lived only seven nights, until Allah afflicted him with the disease of 'adasah' (a plague-like pustule), which killed him. His sons left him like that for two or three nights and did not bury him, until his corpse began to rot. A man of Quraysh said to his sons: "Are you not ashamed? Your father is rotting in the house." They said: "We fear the contagion of this sore." And Quraysh feared adasah just as plague is feared. The man said: "Come, I am with you." Abu Rafi' says: By Allah, they did not wash him; rather they threw water on him from a distance, then they carried him and dumped him beside a wall in the upper part of Makkah and threw stones over him.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(1) هكذا في (ز) و (ب)، وفي المطبوع: طُنب، وهما بمعنًى، وسقطت اللفظة في (ص) و (م).
Note / Verification of the text: It is so in manuscripts (Z) and (B), while the printed edition has the word "tunub"; both have the same meaning. In manuscripts (S) and (M) the word has dropped out.

(2) في (ز) و (ص) و (ب) نزل إليَّ، والمثبت من (م) وهو الجادة. وفي المطبوع: برك على صدري.
Note / Verification of the text: Manuscripts (Z), (S) and (B) have the words "nazala ilayya", while the words established from manuscript (M) are the standard usage; the printed edition has the words "baraka 'ala sadri".

(1) بالراء المهملة، ومعناها: شدَّت ثيابها على نفسها، كما تدل عليه رواية ابن أبي عاصم في "الآحاد والمثاني" (3195)، حيث قال: فقامت أم الفضل فاحتجرَت مِلْحفتها.
Linguistic note: The word is "ihtajarat" (with an undotted ra'), meaning: she tied her garment firmly around herself. The evidence for this meaning is the narration in Ibn Abi 'Asim's "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (3195), where the words are: "So Umm al-Fadl stood up and wrapped her cloak firmly around herself (fa-htajarat milhafataha)."
وأصل الاحتجار: الإحاطة على الشيء، وكذلك الاحتجاز بالزاي، فكلاهما بمعنًى، والله أعلم.
Linguistic explanation: The root meaning of "ihtijar" is to encircle something. Likewise "ihtijaz" (with a za') has the same meaning, and Allah knows best.

Linguistic note: It came like this in our manuscripts, while in "Sirat Ibn Hisham" 1/ 647 the word is "fala'at", and in some other sources it is "falaqat"; both mean: "split / tore open". And "'aliqat" means: it became fixed until it left a mark in it (derived from "'alaq"), i.e. when something catches on another thing and tears it, as when one passes by a tree or a thorn and it catches in his garment and tears it. So its meaning is close to "falaqat" and "fala'at".

Grading: Its chain is da'if because of the weakness of "Husayn bin Abdullah" (who is Ibn 'Ubaydullah bin 'Abbas al-Hashimi).
Defect ('illah): Jarir (bin Hazim) and Yunus bin Bukayr (as will come at number 5493) are alone in mentioning "Ibn 'Abbas" in the chain, whereas all the other students of Muhammad bin Ishaq contradicted them and did not mention "Ibn 'Abbas", as will come with the author (al-Hakim) at number (5494) via Ziyad bin Abdullah al-Bakka'i.
Decisive point: Al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (1171) that this (version without Ibn 'Abbas) is the "mahfuz" (preserved) narration.
قلنا: وعكرمة لم يُدرك أبا رافع، فالخبر منقطع أيضًا. إسحاق بن إبراهيم: هو ابن راهويه.
Further defect: We say: 'Ikrimah did not live in the time of Abu Rafi', so this report is also "munqati'" (broken).
Identification of narrators: "Ishaq bin Ibrahim" is Ibn Rahawayh.
وأخرجه الطبراني في "الكبير" (912) عن موسى بن هارون، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (912) from Musa bin Harun with this same chain.
وأخرجه ابن أبي عاصم في "الآحاد والمثاني" (346) و (3195)، ومن طريقه أبو القاسم الأصبهاني في "سير السلف الصالحين" ص 585 عن أحمد بن عبدة، عن وهب بن جرير، به.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (346, 3195), and through him by Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani in "Siyar al-Salaf al-Salihin" p. 585, from Ahmad bin 'Abdah, from Wahb bin Jarir, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated in longer and shorter forms by: Ibn Sa'd 4/ 9 and 67-68, Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the second part of his "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (546), and Abu Nu'aym in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (406) and "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (6780), via Ibrahim bin Sa'd; Ibn Sa'd 4/ 9 and 67-68 (and through him Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam" 5/ 37) via Harun bin Abi 'Isa al-Shami; Ahmad in his "Musnad" 39/ (23864) from Yazid bin Harun; Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" 1/ 511, and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" (492) and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (406), via Muhammad bin Salamah al-Harrani; Ya'qub bin Sufyan 1/ 512 and Ibn Abi Khaythamah (172, 545) via Abdullah bin Idris; Abu Nu'aym in "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" following (492) via Sa'id bin Bazi' al-Harrani; and al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" 2/ 614 via Salamah bin al-Fadl al-Abrash.
Technical note: All seven of these narrators narrate from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Husayn bin Abdullah, from 'Ikrimah, that "Abu Rafi' said", and then the report. None of them mentions Ibn 'Abbas.
ومثلُه ما سيأتي برقم (5494) من طريق زياد بن عبد الله البكائي عن ابن إسحاق.
Details of the narration: Similar to it is the narration that will come later at number (5494) via Ziyad bin Abdullah al-Bakka'i (from Ibn Ishaq).
وكذلك أخرجه البزار (3866) من طريق يونس بن القاسم اليمامي، عن الحسين بن عبد الله، عن عكرمة، قال: قال أبو رافع، فذكره.
Reference / Source: Likewise it was recorded by al-Bazzar (3866) via Yunus bin al-Qasim al-Yamami, from al-Husayn bin Abdullah, from 'Ikrimah, who said: "Abu Rafi' said", and he mentioned it.
قوله: تُلِيق: أي: تُبقي.
Linguistic explanation: "Tuliq" means: to keep / leave remaining.
الطُّنُب: حبل الخِباء والسُّرادق ونحوهما.
Linguistic explanation: "Al-tunub" is the rope of a tent, canopy or the like.
وقوله: منحناهم أكتافنا، أي: جعلْنا نَفِرُّ أمام المسلمين، فهو كناية عن الهزيمة والفرار.
Linguistic explanation: "Manahnahum aktafana" (we gave them our shoulders), i.e. we began to flee before the Muslims; it is an idiom for defeat and flight.
والبُلْق: جمع أبْلَق، وهو ما كان في لونه سواد وبياض.
Linguistic explanation: "Al-bulq" is the plural of "ablaq", which refers to (an animal or thing) whose colour has both black and white.
والعمد: بفتح العين والميم، وبضمتين: جمع عَمُود.
Linguistic explanation: "Al-'amad" (with fathah on the 'ayn and the mim) or with dammah on both: it is the plural of "'amud" (pillar).
والعَدَسة: بَثْرة كانت تخرج على الناس في الجاهلية تُعدِي شبيهة الطاعون، وقلَّما يُسلم منها.
Linguistic explanation: "Al-'adasah": this was a pustule that used to appear on people in the Jahiliyyah; it was contagious, resembled the plague, and few people survived it.
