Muhammad bin Umar narrates from his teachers that Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib bin Hashim bin Abd Manaf was the paternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). His mother was Nutaylah bint Khabbab bin Kulayb bin Malik bin Amr bin Amir bin Zayd Manat bin Amir al-Khazrajiyyah. Sayyiduna al-Abbas's kunyah was Abu al-Fadl, because al-Fadl was his eldest son. He was three years older than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) took part with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Conquest of Makkah, Hunayn, Ta'if and Tabuk, and on the day of the Battle of Hunayn, when the people scattered, he stood firm with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) along with his family.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Correcting the name: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this name was written with dots as "Khabbab" (with a dotted kha' followed by ba'), while in (S) and (M) it was left without dots. The vocalisation of manuscript (Z) does agree with some sources, but according to most scholars of genealogy and biography the correct form of this name is "Janab" (jim followed by nun), as in al-Daraqutni's "al-Mu'talif wa al-Mukhtalif" 1/ 266, Ibn Makula's "al-Ikmal" 2/ 137, and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "Tabsir al-Muntabih" 2/ 524. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar spelled it out letter by letter (Janab) in "Fath al-Bari" 12/ 93. And Abu Ahmad al-'Askari pointed out in "Tashifat al-Muhaddithin" 2/ 435 that any name other than this (Janab) is a "tashif" (scribal error).
Lineage and background: See Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" 4/ 5 and 15, where the full lineage of "Umm al-'Abbas" is given. He wrote: "bin Zayd Manat bin 'Amir (who is al-Dahyan) bin Sa'd bin al-Khazraj bin Taym Allah bin al-Namir bin Qasit bin Hinb bin Afsa bin Du'mi bin Jadilah bin Asad bin Rabi'ah bin Nizar bin Ma'add bin 'Adnan". This shows that the attribution "al-Khazrajiyyah" here refers to "al-Khazraj bin Taym Allah" (of the tribe of al-Namir bin Qasit), not to the Ansari "Khazraj", which is a branch of the Azd tribe.
