Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5485

Al-Zubayr bin Bakkar relates that Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was three years older than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: (When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was born) my mother was told that Sayyidah Aminah had given birth to a boy. So in the morning she took me by the hand to her. It is as if I can still see him (peace and blessings be upon him) moving his feet in his courtyard, while the women were pulling me towards them and saying: "Kiss your brother." Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) died in the year 34 AH, and at that time he was 88 years old.

Note / Correction of the text: In manuscripts (S) and (M) this word was left without dots, while in manuscripts (Z) and (B) it was distorted into "tuhaddithuni", and in the printed edition it was written "yuhaddithuni". However, the word established here (in the text) agrees with the sources that reported this report, where the word is "yajbidhnani" (they would pull me). Note that "al-jabdh" and "al-jadhb" are two (synonymous) dialectal forms.

Reference / Source: This narration is in Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" 26/ 282-283 via Ahmad bin Sulayman al-Tusi, from al-Zubayr bin Bakkar. But it does not mention the year of the death of al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) nor his age at the time of his death.
Historical note: Al-Zubayr bin Bakkar's statement that al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) died in the year 34 AH is supported by Ibn Ishaq (as Abu Nu'aym reported from him in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" 5326); likewise Abu al-Hasan al-Mada'ini agreed with it (as Ibn Abi Khaythamah reported in the second part of his "Tarikh" 2726, and through him Ibn 'Asakir 26/ 380). Khalifah bin Khayyat also agreed with him in his Tabaqat (p. 4).
Disagreement among scholars: However, the majority of scholars contradicted them (the aforementioned historians), as detailed in "Tarikh Dimashq" 26/ 282 and 379-380.
Linguistic note: The word "yamsa'u" means: he moves / shakes. And "al-'arsah" (with an undotted sad or a dotted dad) refers to the cloth or leather in which a child is placed when being breastfed or while being raised. See al-Khushani's "Sharh Gharib al-Siyar" p. 220.
