Grading: (2) This hadith is da'if (weak). Technical note / Examination of the defect: Although there is no harm in the men of this chain, what is preserved (mahfuz) here is that the narrator from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is "al-Harith bin 'Abdullah al-A'war", as Ibn 'Asakir said in "Tarikh Dimashq" (33/ 105). Al-Qasim bin Ma'n is alone here in naming "'Asim bin Damrah", and al-Mu'afa bin Sulayman al-Harrani is alone in narrating it from him. Al-Qasim bin Ma'n was contradicted by Sufyan al-Thawri, Isra'il and Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, who narrated it from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from al-Harith al-A'war, from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). The majority hold al-Harith al-A'war to be weak. Therefore the cause of the hadith's weakness is not the weakness of "'Asim bin Damrah" (as al-Dhahabi said in al-Talkhis); rather, the real defect is that it is the narration of al-Harith bin 'Abdullah al-A'war from 'Ali. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8210) narrated it from 'Amr bin Yahya bin al-Harith, from al-Mu'afa bin Sulayman, with this chain. ". Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (2/ 566) by way of Isra'il; by Ahmad (846, 852) and al-Tirmidhi (3808) by way of Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah; and by Ibn Majah (137) and al-Tirmidhi (3809) by way of Sufyan al-Thawri. All three narrate it from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from al-Harith al-A'war, from 'Ali bin Abi Talib. Al-Tirmidhi said: "This hadith is gharib; we know it only as the narration of al-Harith from 'Ali." Its wording is: "If I were to appoint anyone as commander (and so on)." Technical note / Inconsistency (idtirab): Al-Daraqutni mentioned in "al-'Ilal" (432) that it has also been reported as: "from Abu Ishaq, from Harithah bin Mudarrib, from 'Ali"; and that Malik bin Mighwal narrated it from Abu Ishaq in "mursal" form from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So in addition to the weakness of al-Harith, there is also inconsistency (idtirab) in this chain.
