Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is sahih, and all the narrators of this chain are thiqah, but it is "mursal" (the Companion is not mentioned). However, this mursal narration does not render defective the "mawsul" (connected) narration before it, as we explained there.
Technical note: "Abu Kurayb" is Muhammad bin al-'Ala' bin Kurayb.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/ 114) and Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1536) narrated it from Waki', with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" (8458), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (4483), by way of Mu'awiyah bin 'Amr al-Azdi, from Za'idah bin Qudamah, from Mansur (with this chain).
Details of the narration: After this, the narration will also come by way of Isra'il bin Yunus al-Sabi'i, from Mansur.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adani in his "Musnad" (as in al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 4066), Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (2/ 549-550), and Ibn 'Asakir (33/ 121), by way of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, from Abu al-'Umays 'Utbah bin 'Abdullah bin 'Utbah al-Mas'udi, from al-Qasim bin 'Abd al-Rahman, likewise in "mursal" form.
Technical note / Variation in the chain: All of them were contradicted by 'Amr bin Abi Qays al-Razi, as narrated by al-Bazzar (1986) and al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (6879). He narrated it from Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir, from al-Qasim bin 'Abd al-Rahman, from his father, from 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud, as "mawsul" (connected), and he is alone in this. Those who narrated it as "mursal" are more reliable and more eminent than him ('Amr bin Abi Qays). Therefore the mursal narration is the better established (athbat), as al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (820).
Important point: Nevertheless, it is established from 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in "mawsul" form through another chain, which has passed in the previous route.
