Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5461

Shaqiq relates: I heard Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) say: "In his habits and manners, his bearing and his ways, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was the most similar of people to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), from the time he left his house until he returned (he was an embodied model of the Sunnah). I do not know what his affairs inside his house were like. However, the well-informed Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) know that Ibn Umm Abd (Abdullah bin Mas'ud) will be among the closest to Allah on the Day of Resurrection."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This report is "sahih", and its chain is "hasan" on account of Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Jabbar (al-'Utaridi), and he has been corroborated.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (Identification of narrators): Abu Mu'awiyah is "Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir", al-A'mash is "Sulayman bin Mihran", and Shaqiq is "Ibn Salamah Abu Wa'il".
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (38/ 23341) from Muhammad bin 'Ubayd al-Tanafisi and (23342) by way of Za'idah bin Qudamah; and al-Bukhari (6097) by way of Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah. All three narrate it from al-A'mash, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Therefore al-Hakim's istidrak of this hadith is an "oversight" (lapse) on his part.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (23351) narrated it by way of Abu 'Amr al-Shaybani, from Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (23308, 23350, 23408, 23413), al-Bukhari (3762), al-Tirmidhi (3807), al-Nasa'i (8208) and Ibn Hibban (7063) by way of Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid al-Nakha'i, from Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i stated explicitly that he heard this report from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid, except for its final part. For in Shu'bah's narration from him with Ahmad (23350) it is stated explicitly that he did not hear from 'Abd al-Rahman this saying of Hudhayfah: "Wa laqad 'alima al-mahfuzun" (Those who are preserved know well). But some narrators inserted this fragment (idraj) into Abu Ishaq's narration from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid. In reality Abu Ishaq narrates this fragment from al-A'mash, from Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah, from Hudhayfah, as Ahmad recorded it in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1545) and elsewhere.
Note / Clarification: This fragment of the hadith has passed separately at number (3255) by way of Muhadir bin al-Muwarri', from al-A'mash.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The resemblance of 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in "hady" and "dall" (bearing and manner) is also narrated from 'Alqamah bin Qays, as will come with the author at number (5482).
General principle: Ibn al-Athir writes in "al-Nihayah" under the root (d-l-l): "al-dall", "al-hady" and "al-samt" refer to the state in which a person is marked by tranquillity, dignity, good conduct, good ways, and uprightness of outward appearance and bearing.
