Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 545

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zayd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performing ablution. He (peace and blessings be upon him) took separate water for (wiping) his ears, other than the water with which he (peace and blessings be upon him) had wiped his head.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, if it is free of (any weakness from) this Ibn Abi Ubaydillah, for both of them used all of its narrators as evidence.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The individual condition of Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Abi 'Ubayd Allah could not be clearly determined; however, he is corroborated (mutaba'ah) in the next narration.
Important point: Of the remaining narrators above him in the chain, some are thiqah and some are of the rank of "la ba'sa bihim" (there is no harm in their narration).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Khilafiyyat" (132) through Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim and another teacher along with him, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Hakim himself narrated it in his book "Ma'rifat 'Ulum al-Hadith" (p. 97-98) through Abu 'Ali al-Husayn bin 'Ali al-Hafiz, but it does not mention Ibn Miqlas.
Important point: Imam al-Hakim says that this is a "rare sunnah" (sunnah gharibah) in whose narration the people of Egypt are alone, and no one shares it with them; by this he means taking fresh water for wiping the ears.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibn Miqlas and Harmalah bin Yahya are corroborated by al-Haytham bin Kharijah, as found in Imam al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan" (1/ 65).
Grading: Imam al-Bayhaqi declared its chain sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement in narrating from Harmalah bin Yahya: 'Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Salm narrated it in Ibn Hibban (1085) through the chain of Harmalah from Ibn Wahb, and the wording was: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped his head with water that was not left over from (washing) his hands (i.e. with fresh water)"; it makes no mention of the ears.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Qutaybah also corroborated Ibn Salm in narrating this wording from Harmalah.
Reference / Source: This is found in the narration of Ibn al-Muqri', as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar quoted in "al-Talkhis al-Habir" (1/ 90) from Ibn Daqiq al-'Id's book "al-Imam".
Details of the narration: A whole group narrated from Ibn Wahb mentioning only the wiping of the head (without mentioning the ears), among them Surayj bin al-Nu'man (Musnad Ahmad 26/ 16467), Harun bin Ma'ruf, Harun bin Sa'id, Abu al-Tahir Ahmad bin 'Amr bin al-Sarh (Sahih Muslim 236, Abu Dawud 120) and 'Ali bin Khashram (al-Tirmidhi 35).
Grading: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared this route (without the ears) "mahfuz" (preserved) in "Bulugh al-Maram" (42), and according to Imam al-Bayhaqi too this is the more sahih.
Important point: Imam Ibn al-Mulaqqin, in "al-Badr al-Munir" (2/ 214), regarded the two as separate hadiths, neither of which affects the authenticity of the other.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated with a sahih chain from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he performed wudu', he would take fresh water with his fingers for his ears.
