(2). Uthman bin al-Sharid narrates that Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) left behind at al-Naqi' one thousand camels, three thousand sheep and a hundred horses grazing there. He used to farm at al-Juruf with twenty water-drawing camels, and from there he would store a year's provision for his family. Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) had accepted Islam before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the house of al-Arqam bin Abi al-Arqam and began calling to the religion there. He took part with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Battles of Badr, Uhud, al-Khandaq and all the campaigns, and at Badr, Uhud and al-Khandaq, when people fell back, he stood firm with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) So it came in manuscript (Z), and likewise in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (3/ 127): "yaddakhil" (with lam). It seems to be a verb derived from "dakhl" (income), meaning the produce (ghallah) a person receives from his estate or land. So the meaning of "yaddakhil" is: he would take from the produce of his crops an income (provision) sufficient to feed his family for a whole year. In manuscripts (S) and (M) there is a blank space at this spot, and in manuscript (B) it is "yaddakhir" (to store up), with ra' instead of lam; both have the same meaning.
127. Reference / Source: (2) See Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 115, 119 and 127). General principle: It is narrated from Abu Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf, Muhammad bin Sirin and Mujahid (as is found with Ibn 'Asakir (35/ 303 and 304)) that 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf left four wives (at his death); they divided the one-eighth (share of the estate) among themselves, and each of them received eighty thousand.
