Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 543

Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I went with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) into "al-Aswaf" (a garden of Madinah). He (peace and blessings be upon him) went to relieve himself, then when he came back I offered him (peace and blessings be upon him) water, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) tried to bring out both his forearms through the neck opening of his shirt, but they would not come out (because it was tight), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought them out from beneath the cloak. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the ablution and wiped over his leather socks.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) from the narration of Imam Malik bin Anas, and it is also sahih on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. There is a great benefit in it: the two Shaykhs did not record the hadith of Safwan bin Assal about wiping over leather socks when resident and the fixing of its time limit; rather, they agreed on the narrations of Sayyiduna Ali and Mughirah bin Shu'bah. And "al-Aswaf" is one of the well-known quarters of Madinah.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts "al-Ma'mari" is written here, which is a slip of the pen; the correct form is that this is Muhammad bin Ishaq "al-Musayyabi" (al-Makhzumi), who is from the descendants of al-Musayyab bin 'Abid and is well known by this attribution.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts a scribal error (tashif) occurred here, giving "al-Aswaq" (with the letter qaf). There is no place by this name in Madinah; the correct word is "al-Aswaf" (with the letter fa'), as the geographers have stated explicitly. According to Imam al-Bayhaqi, it is an orchard in Madinah.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator 'Abd Allah bin Nafi' is Ibn Abi Nafi' al-Sa'igh al-Madani, and Dawud bin Qays is Dawud bin Qays al-Farra'.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it (1323) through Abu Ya'la; and Imam al-Nasa'i narrated it (126) through the route of 'Abd Allah bin Nafi' alone.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is reported from Bilal bin Rabah (may Allah be pleased with him) through several routes that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over his leather socks (khuffs).
Reference / Source: This is in Sahih Muslim (275), and all its routes can be seen in "Musnad Ahmad" (39/ 23884).

Important point: Here a blank space (bayad) has been left in the manuscripts.
