Khalifah bin Khayyat mentioned the same lineage stated above and added that Abd al-Rahman's kunyah was Abu Muhammad, and in the Jahiliyyah his name was Abd al-Ka'bah, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed it and named him Abd al-Rahman.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: (2) It is in "Tabaqat Khalifah bin Khayyat" (p. 15), but without mention of his name in the Jahiliyyah and of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) naming him when he accepted Islam. Note / Clarification: Khalifah added that his mother was Safiyyah bint Abd Manaf bin Zuhrah bin Kilab. He said: And it is said that his mother was al-Shifa' bint Awf bin Abd al-Harith bin Zuhrah. He also added that he died in Madinah in the year 32 AH. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Among those who mentioned that Abd al-Rahman bin Awf's name in the Jahiliyyah was "Abd al-Ka'bah" is Muhammad bin Sirin, as Ma'mar bin Rashid narrated from him in his "al-Jami'" (19863), and likewise Amr bin Dinar said, as Ibn Sa'd (3/ 116) narrated from him. Important point: But the correct view is that his name in the Jahiliyyah was "Abd Amr", as Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) himself stated explicitly, and this narration will come after it with the author (al-Hakim).
